Even as a zutara shiper i do agree on this point. Not all zutara shippers do this but i sertainly do this. I liked it Because there was narrative tension. And i was drawn to it at least in part bc thst's what i was taught a straight relationship Should be (i mean just look at most popular rom coms from that time). That said, it is unfair to lump all shippers together, (not saying you are, just that this tends to happen a lot). Plus it's not like it's inherrently bad to like this dynamic for that reason or any other. What is important is to unpack our biasses about what straight romance Should be, and move past that. As an adult i'm learning to accept and respect my preferences (im not stupid, shallow or toxic for liking EtL) while also learning to appriciate stories that depict relationships in ways i wouldn't nessesarily expect from my pattern-recognition-brain alone. Embracing how stories can be told differently and YA KNO i can rly respect kataang for that at least! (Even tho the writing squicks me out to no end but ya kno, i can see where ppl come from)

I do think wish fulfillment towards opposites-attract and enemies-to-lovers tropes drives a lot of the interest around Zutara. In general, I think a lot of people have been conditioned to see opposite characters as romantic, when that shouldn't be the case. Who people are isn't romantic. In my opinion, it's what people do that is romantic.

But I just had to say that you got me wanting to read fics about these two π I've always been a shipper since I discovered fandom in the 90s, and when I watched AtLA years ago, I definitely saw the chemistry between Katara and Zuko. Kataang at the end was a very 'really??' moment for me because Katara had never shown that kind of interest in Aang, and Mei is so blaaah that I always forget about her, haha. Anyway, I was never into AtLA or Zutara enough to read any fics, but now I'm feeling motivated to seek some out. Also, thanks for not dismissing shipping. Sure, sometimes people just want to make The Characters smooch, but as you said, a lot of the time, it's about soooo so much more.
