Apparently George RR Martin told D&D several of the major plot points he had planned, but the last two seasons were awful. (I myself stopped at season 6 since I didn't want to see the last 2, so I mostly know what happens through angry Reddit rants people made and YT short clips.) This might be a hot take, but I think the bigger problem was with the execution of the ideas more than bad ideas. Like the Mad Queen is a very interesting idea on paper, but the sudden change feels completely out of character and unearned. Similarly, many 'intelligent' characters suddenly made bafflingly bad decisions without good justifications or logic behind them. The once snappy and witty dialogue became on the nose and lacked precious subtext. This is purely speculation, but if many of these plotpoints were originally George's plan, then the hate and backlash might be a large part of his inactivity. And even if George did greatly improve on the ideas, like a proper build to a Mad Queen, the memories and experiences of the awful version in the show might have soured people's perception of it too much. I don't really care what happens in the final book, but I hope that it's the satisfying conclusion all of us are hoping for : )

It is known that the few story points George told D&D include Bran ending up as king
