I came here because I was curious how much futher than Youtube you were, just to find it was much much further, so I had to sign up here too :D Sandalwood has flower language too - it's 'calmness' and 'composure', which are very fitting indeed (as you have already found out but not putting it in just in case other people haven't watched us much) Who's that man indeed - hmmmm I wonder ;)

I also like how you pointed out how maomao downplays herself after the slap but i also want to point out in the episode how we really see how out of depth maomao is in the outer palace. She wanted to bring her medicine but it is well known that ladies cannot be doctors so it would be seen negatively, she finds trouble understanding the reason for different departments of the palace (as currently they don't serve a purpose to intrigue her yet), and its only after the slap does she understand the social cues of the court ladies. I really like this series because i doesn't have the main character know everything when they enter a new "area", maomao has the learn the rules of the game and navigates using the inner court and brothels as references. I love seeing her grow and understand, its my favorite thing to see as she pieces things together in time with the audience as it makes it feel like we are solving along with her! I just love this show so much and I really think your reactions do the show justice!

I didn't mention it here solely because I had already discussed that this was likely what the Emperor was doing quite a few episodes back! :)

Also not sure if you'll see it... I'm pretty sure the show doesn't go anymore into Lishu's backstory as it was part of the previous plotline.. What you might have missed (or forgotten about potentially?) is we did hear why she was brought back to the rear palace and made a concubine again after being sent away when the previous emperor died... The emperor actually did it to protect her, and while it's true he doesn't 'visit' her, he presumably keeps her in that role to keep her safe. Also remember that in the 'family tree' they had going on, Lisu was the 'mother in law' to Ah Duo, so the current emperor would also have been considered her 'son in law', so it could purely be for that reason that he brought her back to protect her in the best way he could... Its either basically said that it was for protection in one of the earlier episodes or it was a speculation of MaoMao (but we know how accurate those usually are haha).

As long as the emperor has sired no male children, Jinshi will continue to be locked down as heir to the throne and the emperor's little brother. The only way to escape that fate is to become a different person.

Even then it does not have to be parental genetics. For example - my dad is 6ft and my mum is 5ft 5 but I am 5ft. My brothers are 5ft 7 and 6ft. However, both my grandmothers on my mum and dad's side are 4ft 10. Genetics can be passed down not directly by the parents but by our family line. I stopped growing at the age of 11 height wise. Everyone's body is different and if anything I think it's meant to be a stylistic choice rather than evidence of malnutrition. If it was the case of malnutrition we would see the impact on others within the Pleasure District. I think they chose to have Maomao shorter because the beauty standard was tall and curvaceous women. She does not fall into that criteria so is instantly looked at and frowned upon by other women because she receives Jinshi's affection whilst not meeting the standard of beauty that is glorified. I think it's meant to further emphasise how Maomao views herself as ugly or unattractive because she has grown up around this beauty standard and does not see herself as obtaining it. There are some servants that are shorter than her and one of Gyokuyou's Ladies in Waiting is around the same height as Maomao :)

2025-09-21 17:21:09 +0000 UTCAt the very end of episode 10, Sophie you suggested the idea that Maomao's father might not be her biological dad because you believe he was back then an eunuch who was expelled from the rear place after delivering Ah-Duo's baby. 🤱🏻👨🏻🏯 With this idea in mind, something struck me in this episode: the size contrast between Maomao and her family (her father, grandmother and especially the appearance of her tall big sisters). Typically, girls stop growing between the ages of 14 and 16, often two years after their first period, as puberty marks the slowing down and eventual stop of growth. Although the growth spurt ends with menstruation, a slight increase in height can still occur. We know that Maomao is 16-17 years old, so her height will likely remain permanent. Since the start of the series, I don't recall anyone shorter than Maomao, except for her gossip-loving friend Xiaolan and Lady Lishu, who is 14. I would then propose two hypotheses✌️: 1️⃣ Maomao's short stature is linked to her genes: Maomao's biological parents were at very least average height. 2️⃣ Maomao may be affected by malnutrition, particularly chronic undernutrition in early life, which causes stunting, a condition where children are significantly shorter than their potential height. This linear growth retardation starts even before birth and continues into infancy and childhood, leading to permanent height deficits that are mostly irreversible after the age of two-three.

And jinshi being the most hot and cold man of all time, how you gonna wipe the lipstick off her face and kiss it in front of her but "you look pretty " is to much lol
