Yes, it's a culture thing. All other sports have colloquial names that we use and literally it's only soccer that people have an issue with. Seems to be more of a "we don't like Americans" thing more than "how dare you call this sport something else."

Hell yeah I'm just as much invested into this anime as you are. So excited and curious to see how it plays out Also, incase you didn't notice the VA for the crazy glasses guy running the show is the same VA as Levi and Law so I love that. And as far as you reacting to sports anime, I'd personally love to see you finish haikyuu if you've only seen season 1

The word "soccer" is simply a little weird because it would be as if you call american football "riccer". It developed from the original name "associate football" out of unknown reasons around 30 years after the first rules were established and doesn't describe the sport at all. It was usually used by the upper class in Britain to describe the game. But nowadays it is usually used only in countries where american football is prevalent like the US and Canada.
