We still don't know for sure honestly, but I feel like the Smiley thing is Oda vaguely showing us how Blackbeard could have stolen Whitebeard's power. Smiley was a poison gas that had been fed an Axolotl devil fruit, and it seems like when it "died", the nearest fruit immediately transformed to become the new Axolotl fruit.
