They are both the opposite of "dumb" Luffy follows his instinct and is mostly battle-smart and emotional-smart. Blackbeard also follow his instinct but not without consideration of possible outcomes. So he is planning-smart if you will. Like you said FATE is also a large portion of both characters.

But here we see, that while Crocodile has a carefully laid out strategy that will lead him to his goal. Blackbeard, more just has a few general bulletpoints and kind of forgets to account for certain details.

Very important: Blackbeard draws in everything. Including pain. He feels twice as much pain for his Devil Fruit than every body else. He draws in pain also. Another hint/fact is that Crocodile called them "awakened Zoan types". Especially tough and resilient. That's a thing. You should probably look at what Luffy and Zoro says right after Blackbeard's speech in that town. The mentality of The Blackbeard's is fate. Kinda like Luffy. They are dumb but strive for what they wan't and if they die trying to achieve their goals that would be good enough. Just like Luffy said in the first episode to Coby

i think the reason they are using nets instead of bullets are beacuse there are multiple devil fruit users there. so its probally seastone nets. bullets wont work on people like crocodile or luffy so i guess thats their best option
