Fire island is off the coast of New York, during the 60's and 70's it basically became a hideaway/paradise for gay men to go where they wouldn't have to hide and yeah was kind of a huge orgy fest. It's still a real place and you can still go.

2026-01-07 14:24:40 +0000 UTCI'm going to hold off on most of my comments until you've seen the last episode, but I will say that Marcus wasn't wrong when he was fearing for his job if he helped Jerome. The Supreme Court in the US only declared in 2020 that employers are not allowed to fire employees for their sexual orientation (and those rights aren't secure right now given what's going on in the US). Marcus definitely could have been fired for being too vocally supportive of gay people in his classroom
