Corwin watched the Doctor walk out of the room and then focused all of his will on simply moving any part of this body. Hastings wouldn’t be back for hours, if he could override standby, he would have plenty of time to find a terminal, jack into the Mesh, and upload his consciousness to the cloud, escaping this nightmare he had been trapped in for the past two months!
Corwin had been “Mesh walking,” trying to hack the hospital’s record database when he tripped a firewall that cut his link to his meat-space body. Desperate to escape roving ICE, he dumped his consciousness into the only real-world mobile unit he could find linked to the network. Dr. Hasting’s Sim-assistant and pleasure-drone “Rachel”
But, Rachel had built in over-rides that prevented Corwin from taking over. Since that day, Corwin has been a powerless passenger with no choice but to experience every sensation as Rachel conducts her duties for Dr. Hastings.
