I agree; I think we would be well served in having this addressed. I think the disconnect comes from the fact that the Third Reich, being (ostensibly) a democratically-elected government felt the need to legitimize and explain their bigotry, whereas a government ruling through divine right needn't justify, announce, or enumerate its hatred of other peoples, so we don't get examples of propaganda saying how Koreans, Chinese, or Filipinos (among many other peoples) are lesser-thans who can be enslaved to work for the state. We also don't get pictures of extermination camps like the ones we see in Europe because Japan was engaged in total war to conquer territories where it committed extermination. It's just so much clearer to understand the bigotry and motivations (and planning) involved when they publish propaganda against other peoples and go on to construct installations with 40 to 100 subcamps dedicated to ending groups of people (Auschwitz and Gross-Rosen, respectively). We can point to Japan's Unit 731, but how many people even know about that?? But, of course, that's all just conjecture on my part.

Dan, I loved the episode. Long time listener. But there's something I'm just not getting out of it that I'm hoping you can spend more time on in future. In my opinion one of the great unforced errors of the war is the difference between Japanese branding and Japanese practice with POWs and especially with subject populations. Why? Why was there such a gap? Why is it that for every General Homma there was a Colonel Tsuji? Where did the horrific mistreatment come from culturally and why was it allowed to persist and wreck the Japanese image I. The Greater East Asian Co Prosperity Sphere? I can't get my head around it. You spend some time on it in Episode 3 but I am still unsatisfied and lacking in understanding. Please delve into it more deeply before we finish the series?

Great podcast!

I absolutely love this show, and had to add myself to the patreon list! The only part that sucks is when an episode is over! I just find myself hungry for more! Keep up the amazing work!

I mean dude, I thought there was no way you could top the death throes of the Roman republic or blueprint to Armageddon, but this series is really really good. And for one dollar an installment

Best dollar I ever spent. I still have one more hour to go but very well done man

A new Hardcore History AND an imminent book release? I didn't realize Christmas was coming early this year.

Andrew Burt

No. At 3 hours out of 5 now, and he is still on the fall of Singapore. Probably at least two more.

Thank you Master Carlin for your continuing gifts. Coincidentally, this release happens to be on my 56 birthday and I can not think of a more fantastic way to start my 56th year but to listen to Master Carlin's masterpiece(s).

Just about to head to bed and this popped up, never mind sleep is a luxury
