Private Practice S02E11 - Contamination FULL REACTION

Measles cases were greatly reduced for many years due to vaccinations. But now, thanks to a bunch of people deciding science is a lie, people have stopped getting the vaccine for their children and now the numbers are rising. The claim that vaccines cause autism originated from a fraudulent and now-retracted research paper published in 1998. Should a parent have the right to choose when it comes to vaccines? That a tough question. Does a parent have the right to gamble with the life of their child? If a parent decides to have their children play Russian roulette with a loaded gun, do they have that right? The science is out there, it has been proven that vaccines not only protect the child that receives them but protect the others around them. A vaccinated child can not transmit the disease to others. At an minimum unvaccinated children should not be allowed to attend public schools.

Measles is still a thing but it’s a lot rarer than it used to be due to the vaccines. Measles rates are significantly higher now than they have been in the last 30+ years though especially in the US, due to anti-vaxxers. We don’t have Tylenol in the UK either but my understanding is it’s just a brand name for Paracetamol (or Acetaminophen as they call it in the US) We have Panadol here that’s a popular brand which I believe you have in Australia too? (i’m just assuming because there’s a Tim Minchin song that mentions Panadol and he’s Australian) The vaccines causing autism thing came about in the late 90’s from a study by one doctor that was disproven almost immediately but people latched onto it anyway. The reality is that medical advancements in vaccines happened at the same time as advancements in diagnosing things like autism which is why people thought there was a link. The thing that annoys/upsets me the most about the “vaccines cause autism” crap is not just that it’s total BS, it’s that the people that refuse to get their child vaccinated for that reason are really saying that they’d prefer their child dead than autistic. Cooper definitely shouldn’t have vaccinated the kid like that. I do think the mother was being extremely negligent but i don’t think it can be classed as emergency medication. Very hypocritical of Dell to have got himself sober and then not give her the same chance to, especially when we learn he was the one that got her started on it. At least he came around in the end but he shouldn’t have needed telling. The “Hey Kevin, it’s me” might have made more sense back 15+ years ago if she called his landline with no caller ID etc. It feels more playful to say “it’s me” than “It’s Addison” i guess.
