How things are going...
Very shit. Progress has been quite slow this month. I lost a lot of momentum and just felt unsure as to how I wanted to continue this arc. I still need more time to finish 0.3.20, but we're getting there. I've finished the scene I've been working on for the past 3 weeks, and yeah, things haven't been moving as I hoped. I don't think rushing it is the play, as it would definitely hamper the overall quality of the game. I speak on this from experience.
Regarding the removal/ban of 18+ games on Steam/Itch...
As some of you are aware, NSFW games have been purged/removed/banned/shadow banned from Steam and Itch. I've always been aware of credit card companies disliking NSFW content, and it has always been on my mind that my game would be hit someday. It's also why I made SubscribeStar as a backup plan, since Patreon has a history of removing NSFW devs from their platform.
We think about how a lot of NSFW sites (like P*rnhub and xh*mster) started to purge a lot of their videos to cater to these credit card companies and now, NSFW games are their current target. How will this affect us...
This is very troubling. I'm certain this will greatly damage SL at least in terms of visibility. I'm pretty sure that Itch is where most of my audience comes from and my analytics there (viewership) have dropped by 90%. In order for the game to remain healthy, we really need to ensure that newer players are able to play the game and older players are able to continue playing the game. The purges basically kill that (at least on Itch), but what's most concerning is that this might be only the beginning. Perhaps other platforms will follow their example and censor/outlaw NSFW games/content. It would crush my motivation to continue working on SL.
As of right now, I'm still working and plan to continue working on SL. I'm hoping things get better, change comes, or we find a new platform that tells the credit companies to go fuck themselves. We'll have to see in the coming weeks how much damage this has done. SL is my main source of income, and I have bills to pay. I don't live with mom/dad, I don't have inherited wealth, and I don't have health insurance. This honestly feels very soul crushing, like, I WANT to work on games, but how can I if I can't support myself? I don't have time to just sit around and pray for a solution. I can only work, and if I don't work, I'll be homeless.
I've been doing some thinking about an SFW visual novel game that's short and sweet (but based on the Scarlet universe), no NSFW (zzz) and I'm like, "Holy crap... I don't think I want to work on something that doesn't have nked girls in it." Like, a big motivation for me to work on SL is because I get to make my own sx scenes and see n*ked girls all the time. But that being said, if NSFW games are banned, what can I do? I do want to work on games with my own stories. I do have a goal of publishing a game on Steam someday. But what the fck can I do if these games are banned? Would people even be interested in a SFW game?
If there ever is a time where I feel that I no longer want to make games anymore, you can be sure that I will end this page and let everyone know. I want to be as transparent and honest with you all as possible. That's the least I can do for the people supporting me on the project for so long. But as of right now, I still want to continue to work on games. I feel like, at this stage of my life, this is my purpose and my joy.
