Android Version for 0.3.15 News and Release

Alright guys, it's been a bit but the Android version is now finally done. If you don't use Android, you can completely ignore this post.

Here's the deal. People have been having serious problems with Android for a while ever since the game went over 2 GB. The reason is that Android does not allow you to download APK's over this size. I had to use a secondary method for people to play the Android version but people were still confused (there are a ton of users who don't know how to unzip files, move files, understand English enough to follow my written instructions). But now, the latest version of Android doesn't even allow you to move files (unless it's through PC, iirc).

So what I decided to do is basically compress the entire game so much so that the game is now under 2 GB. This might be an ends to a means (hope I'm using the term correctly) because the game might be over 2 GB eventually, but for now, we're fine. I accomplished this by significantly reducing image and video quality. I had some friends test this on their devices and they don't think it's noticeable, most likely because of the resolution of their phone compared to my 4k monitor.

That being said, it does take a lot of time to do this now, so from now on, the Android version will be updated separately from the PC/MAC versions. For me to fully compress everything for Android, it took me literally a day to process everything.

You'll be able to find the Android versions through the download links here:

As for 0.3.16, I've already started some script last weekend. I returned to classes so I don't know when this update will be ready but I have a feeling that it's going to be a very long story update again. I do kind of want to complete Rita's arc next update, but we'll see. It's gonna be long and I'll probably trim some dialog to keep it more simple. I have a feeling that there won't be an update for next month, so if you want to pull out of your pledge, I totally understand.

Again, thank you for your continued support,

JYP

Sorry nevermind this, all good now. I was able to copy it from pc to android 13

Amdarais

Can I still manually copy the asset from the pc version to android? Cause it seems blurry on my phone

Amdarais

To open zip files on android 14 you need a program like rar. To move anything in to the android/data folder you need to connect the phone to a pc and access the folder through the pc

Adrian

Just download rar then?

GoodGodISuck

Hey, Android has no integrated program to open zip files or similar compressed files, however there are a bunch of free apps available that can unpack those on Android. I for example use the app rar from the publisher rarlab that can be found in the playstore. You should avoid having to copy anything in to android/data because you need to access the device from a pc for that. I'll send you screenshots of how another game avoids it and its install instructions

Adrian

I was told that the latest version does not allow you to open zip files (I believe), but older versions of Android still allow this. For JOIplay, I was told this method works fine.

You can still move files if you use something like the files app while using split screen and does joiplay work?

GoodGodISuck

That was it I just needed Uninstall the older version. Thanks!

xynerity

it looks fine to me. ill dm you

Hey Jyp, I'm not sure why but when I download and update Scarlet Law it's still says it's 3.14. The downloaded apk stays it's 3.15. Should I uninstall the older version and install the new one fresh?

xynerity

Okay, that change must have been in a newer version than I have. My mobile version is pretty out of date compared to where I am on PC.

Hey Mikel, thanks for the suggestion! That's exactly the method we've been using since we got over 2 GB (unless I was doing something wrong, which I don't think I was). Unfortunately, there were still a TON of people who aren't very tech savvy. There are people who understand the instructions and a bunch who don't. The biggest issue though, is that Android no longer allows people to open compressed files (according to the people who test this for me) and we've been getting a ton of people asking for help. I think compressing the game by a significant amount is the best method going forward, though, it's a ton of extra work for me it seems. It puts us under 2GB so people can just download the APK and play. The quality is only an issue for mobile versions, which they probably may not even notice since the resolution size is so much smaller on mobile. From my friends who tested this for me, it looks fine. I don't have an Android device but I tested it on an emulator and it should be ok. Perhaps I should have posted a picture for reference, but it doesn't look bad.

Have you tried talking with other game creators? Some of them use a system similar to PC/Mac where the game data goes in a different folder that is just replaced with the new version rather than downloading a new APK each time. EOLOstudios and Stawer are ones that I know do this.
