Freddie

omg i do not remember finding him shifty i'm so glad you do though. my mind was seeing the patterns and signs........... no but for real ur summary of gaon in this ep... MY HEART. MY SWEET GORGEOUS BOY

Freddie

"Both of them going from rage and threats to steadfast love and understanding" WHAT IF I DIEEEE " I think we all overlooked it in the general devastation, but we finally got ‘Gaon-AH’! Twice!!" - actually did not clock this TYSM for pointing out " the very act she thought was the apex of his bastardy was in fact the ultimate demonstration of unconditional love. That must have shaken her to her core." god you're so right I didn't even think that she would also have been hit by the revelation that he didn't start the fire loved ur analysis and commentary as always and honestly I can't think of the other two top gags I just am always hesitant to put something at no1 hehe so excited for monday!

Okay so funny story: my mum actually called the Elijah twist all the way back in ep 4! And she’s not even a particularly engaged viewer – she just watches for fun and doesn’t overthink or analyse! After I watched it for the first time, I watched it again with my sis, and then we got my mum to watch it with us, and when we got to the ep 4 fire flashback, when you see Elijah run out into the church and look for her parents just before the fire is discovered, I swear to god my mum said, half to herself, ‘maybe she started it.’ My sis and I just exchanged this silent ‘oh shit’ look, but luckily by the time ep 15 rolled round, she had completely forgotten about it! I know nobody will believe me, but I did actually consider Elijah as a suspect in the interim tween eps 14-15, but only because it was clear the reveal was coming, and yet I never bought the fire as a murder attempt because there’s absolutely no guarantee who/anyone will die, so I didn’t think it was Yohan, so then you’re asking yourself well who would he cover for? And the only answer seemed to be Isaac or Elijah, and Isaac was sitting in the church so that made no sense, but then I remembered Elijah running in… This truly is the ep of parallels – we have the obvious knife one, and we also have Gaon’s reaction to being choked – in ep 4 he’s struggling and spitting anger vs ep 15 when he’s all zen about it cos he loves this silly dude and knows he won’t hurt him and is just very sad about everything. And then we also have the parallels tween the two times (ep 6 being the first) Gaon has attacked Yohan because of Soohyun: both times the camera follows him as he strides through the house, both times you see but don't hear him shout 'Kang Yohan!', but if the choking scene highlights the difference in Gaon’s reaction, this scene highlights the difference in Yohan’s – raising his left hand to punch Gaon vs using his left hand to stop the knife; the first time it happens he says 'don't ever attack me again', the second, 'I can die if that's what you want'. Both of them going from rage and threats to steadfast love and understanding: ‘go ahead, kill me…but I know you better than you know yourself, and you’re not capable/it would wreck you.’ Look how far they’ve come! It’s so beautiful! The number of emotions you cycled through this ep alone…! Re. Yohan’s potential involvement in Soohyun’s shooting – I knew in my heart of hearts that the character as written and presented to us up til that point absolutely would NOT have done it, but I’ve been burned too many times before by lazy writing that opts for shock value over integrity, so I was fearing the worst. SO glad they didn’t go that route, cos what we got was not only MORE shocking, but also much more emotionally impactful, and all while being entirely in-character! And come to think of it, as a plot twist it achieves something really rare - it actually gets you to totally re-evaluate a character and sheds a whole new light on them, but still in a way that stays completely faithful to what you've seen of them thus far. Seriously, hats off to the writers/Jisung. Every single thing about that last scene in Yohan’s house is pure televisual perfection. Gaon’s poor face as Yohan’s being arrested = him realising in real-time that he was wrong. And I think we all overlooked it in the general devastation, but we finally got ‘Gaon-AH’! Twice!!! And the second time is after the Prof revelation, so it’s not about Yohan trying to change Gaon’s mind – he’s just desperate to reach out to him because he sees how broken he is by the betrayal. Oh the linguistics of love! And the triple whammy of twists! My fave of the three might actually be the reveal that Sunah planted Gaon from the very beginning – like you said, the Prof had started to act a bit sketchy so some ppl had started to suspect something was up, and arsonist Elijah is obviously world-shaking, but we knew the fire reveal was coming sooner or later, but Sunah noticing the brotherly resemblance all the way back when and using it to shake up Yohan????? Diabolical, on both her and the show’s part! I don’t know bout anyone else, but after the show pretty much dropped the whole doppelganger thing eons ago, I just assumed it was a convenient quirk that was included for early shock value but ultimately meaningless – but no!!!! She might as well have been talking to the audience when she said it’s a coincidence for them to look alike, but for the lookalike to end up working with his lookalike’s brother?? That’s one coincidence too many! Nobody does it like her. Yohan’s feral reaction to the video – is it the idea of anyone seeing it or specifically Gaon? The gut-clenching fear that it will change how he feels about Elijah? I laughed at how quickly you turned on Sunah! I actually don’t think she was ever planning on telling Elijah – she has her own sort of code, particularly when it comes to girls, so being incredibly cruel to Yohan? Absolutely, but I don’t think she’d have done that to Elijah. Her reaction is fascinating though – the tear! We know (up until a few eps ago at least) she believed Yohan had done it himself and then played the saviour, so I wonder if finding out that actually everything he’s done has been in the name of love – of his brother, of Elijah - broke her? She’s confronted with the fact that this man who she’s spent the whole series considering her mirror image, someone who can understand her, is not just loving (and receiving love in return), but the very act she thought was the apex of his bastardy was in fact the ultimate demonstration of unconditional love. That must have shaken her to her core. And we can already see (from their scene in his office) that Yohan’s words are hitting especially hard now, precisely because she’s starting to realise it’s true, that, like you said, even when she gets what she wants, she’s still not happy. She’d sort of been surfing on the wave of maniacal success up til this point, but now she’s (almost) reached the top, and yet she’s still just bitter and lonely. Whereas, no matter how much she gloats about Yohan also being a pathetic figure, she knows that he has a chance at real happiness with Elijah and Gaon, that that’s all he needs. So of course she has to destroy it. I want to marry your analysis of their interaction in Yohan’s office! That is so spot-on. Also love the symbolism of Gaon opening the door and letting in the light. Old men trashfire yaoi! Their interactions throughout the show are hilarious but particularly in this ep – they truly give off bickering married couple sick of each other after decades together vibes. The whole Yohan for President sequence is peak Magnificent Bastard – show me something more satisfying than watching him snatch victory from the jaws of defeat whilst dressed to the nines and accompanied by a sexy soundtrack! Uh oh – President is starting to fall for his own hype…nothing more dangerous than a true believer. The ep title being Medea – so is that the Prof then? Sacrificing his ‘children’ to get back at the person he blames for everything? When you rewatch knowing his true colours, there are little delicious snippets of foreshadowing – when they’re playing basketball in ep 2 and he pretends to be hurt so he can get the ball off Gaon, and Gaon accuses him of cheating and he says no he’s just faking…! Him telling Gaon after the motorbike chase set-up that it was probably Yohan – was he aware of the plan all along and that was a deliberate misdirect?? And even earlier in this ep – obviously him pushing Gaon to investigate is a clue in retrospect, but particularly the detail of him using his police contact to identify the number plate…and then instead of getting the cops to go and pick him up, he’s okay with Gaon going all on his own to the potential shooter’s house?? ‘You absolute snake in the grass ratty rat-man’ might be my new favourite quote! My potentially controversial take is that the behaviour of the elites during the fire (Minister Cha crippling Elijah aside, obviously!) is actually the most understandable and least reprehensible thing we’ve seen from them all series, and so Yohan’s grand revenge plan is really just him desperately needing someone to blame for his beloved brother’s death, and, since he can’t place that blame on the person ‘responsible’ for starting the fire, he puts it all on them instead. I mean, he even says it himself in ep 8, that their behaviour was entirely human – they were panicking, they were only concerned with saving themselves, completely natural (if unflattering) reactions to being caught in that sort of situation, and sure they were shitty ppl to begin with and we all HOPE we’d do better but would we?? – but it was their hypocrisy he despised. And yet I don’t really think hypocrisy is the reason he’s spent all these years carefully constructing an intricate multistep plan to wreak bloody vengeance upon their insufferable heads! Realistically, nothing they did actively contributed to Isaac’s death, but they were there and they’re generally awful, so if someone has to pay, they’ll do nicely! I have to know – what are the other two top TV gags??

I am SOOOO glad that the professor snake reveal gagged you bc idk if you remember but in a very early episode you literally said you didn't trust him bc he just seemed shifty even tho you had no real evidence and I was like oh nooo the reveal is gonna be ruined bc when I tell you I was shaken TO MY CORE by it !!!!!!!! But thank god it must have slipped your mind in the whirlwind of other gags so you got to enjoy this one too. I truly predicted nothing in this episode the first time I watched it, the only thing I felt sure of was that I never thought Yohan actually killed cop bob because I didn't think it made narrative sense for him to turn out to be evil. But I had no clue who did kill her. Anyway I feel like everyone (very rightly) has a lot of sympathy for Yohan in this ep which FAIR but I just wanna acknowledge poor Gaon who was clearly heartbroken when he thought Yohan was behind it all and then has to face the fact that actually the man he loves WAS true hearted and actually now GAON is the monster (from his perspective anyway) who came into the lives of this innocent family that endured so much suffering just to ruin them seemingly beyond repair. Another addition to the long list of good things Gaon has loved and lost... my poor sweet summer child Also the confrontation scene where Yohan is holding the knife hits so different rewatching it knowing he did nothing wrong :(((

This was the episode that solidified Yo-han as one of my favorite characters of all time. Can't believe it's about to be the final episode!

I don't have time to write down all my many thoughts just yet, so instead let me bestow upon you this dorky loser Yohan gifset as a balm/compensation for your pain: https://yohankang.tumblr.com/post/660070848588316672/kang-yohan-the-abyss And I mean this in the nicest possible way: your rage/anguish/shock/denial/devastation has given me life - thank you!

I absolutely love your reactions and commentary on this show, especially to that crazy reveal—ahhhh!! I’m so glad you checked out this show and got to witness its greatness I’ll definitely put together a list for you of behind the scenes and interviews because they’re definitely worth watching for this show. I’ll prepare that after I sleep for the night if no one else has :)

Sara Ell

Yessss, beyond evil!! These two shows are TOP TIER, they sit at the same table

Sara Ell

I watched this show weekly when it aired and when I tell you I was so scared for this ep. cuz I was hoping and praying that Yohan had nothing to do with the murder and the church fire…and then the revelation at the end???!?! I was gagged. The storytelling and the acting of this show is just so brilliant that I still think about it years after. Can’t wait to see your reaction for the finale!

Leslie

Waiting for all the gags like hehehehehe. Gaon at the end realising he trusted the wrong people and just crying on the floor. Also that professor WHEN I CATCH YOU I HATE YOU. The level of gags... you'd love beyond evil
