2025-03-04 12:13:55 +0000 UTCSomething I love about what I’ve seen of this show is that it’s like the woman who is the other judge on the panel could be playing her role as if she is the main character in a more lighthearted show and the main judge is her love interest. But actually that’s not at all what is happening on this show because they’re subverting the k-drama expectations. The tropes are all there but they’ve been reshuffled for Yohan and Gaon to be intense at each other.

2025-03-04 07:41:53 +0000 UTCThe whole flashback Yohan/Rachmaninov rich prick reveal sequence is one of my favourite scenes of the entire show, it's just so well done and so satisfying and, as always, the music is the cherry on the top. Speaking of rich prick, we did actually see him in the first ep but incredibly briefly - it's at the very beginning of the ep, during the set-up/world-building montage before Yohan's grand entrance, he's walking down some stairs with glamorous women on either arm. That's another thing I love about the show - virtually nobody and nothing is throwaway - everything comes back round or has a deeper meaning. Chairman Seo (gnarly old guy who's head of the SRF) was also in ep 1 but again, only very briefly, and in that same set-up/world-building montage - in fact, the good news is there are nowhere near as many characters as in WoH, and basically all the main players have already been introduced (and named with handy onscreen labels) in the aforementioned montage! Something I found slightly confusing with these subs is their sometimes interchangeable use of titles, so in case it wasn't clear, Heo Jung-Se (OTT former actor with glasses) is the *actual* President, as opposed to president of a company! One of my fave things about Gaon is how empathetic and emotionally intelligent he is - he heard the priest's story and (like you!) instead of assuming the worst, we see him putting the pieces together in his head as he rides the bus back - what he'd already learned about Yohan's upbringing/dad (and even then he picked up just as much from the way Yohan's demeanour changed when his childhood was first brought up as from what Yohan himself actually told them), young Yohan apparently being withdrawn and solitary, getting bullied and ostracised - and, as a result, deciding to remove the bug, my guess because he's starting to realise Yohan's perhaps a more complex/nuanced figure than first suspected. The moral ambiguity is definitely one of the series' strongest points and some of the best fandom discussions were just thorny philosophical quandaries (it's so easy and so tempting in fiction to just go along with the Yohan figure!), which makes a lot of sense considering the show creator/writer is actually a former judge himself! So he definitely knows what he's doing re. reeeeeally teasing out all those messy ethical dilemmas. Eeeeeeee I genuinely can't wait for you to watch ep 3 - let's just say it's a gamechanger!
