Proportion Notes Revision

Hey all, I've been thinking about proportions a bit again (I always am) and was a bit unsatisfied with a few of the measurements I gave so revised my notes and figured I should share since quite a few people seemed to appreciate them.

The only changes are to do with widths.

For my 7.5 head system, I decreased the width of the shoulders to 1 1/3 heads instead of 1.5. I was finding 1.5 was often too wide of a figure given the torso being made smaller in this configuration. Likewise, the hips are also 1 1/3 heads now. Funnily enough, I didn't change the actual example drawing much as the shoulders/hips were already closer to this new measurement lol.

I also tried to make it more clear that these measurements are from deltoid to deltoid and hip to hip.

For the 7 head system, I decreased the shoulder and hip width to 1.25. I think it's important to keep these at least the same as making the hips wider will create a very bottom heavy appearance. Sometimes that will work though (ex: 2B)! Just often it's not what I'm personally going for.

The other 2 systems are based on average human proportions / different artist's methods and thus are unchanged.

Again these are just guidelines and you should find the proportions that work for you by drawing a lot from reference! And there's no reason to always use the exact same proportions of course, you can play with them as much as you want. Regardless, I hope this still helps and maybe clears up any issues if I caused any lol.

Thanks for sharing! Ive been trying to learn how to color and I’m confused when some tutorials say use multiply, then shade there. But I also see others imply just color picking then color on top with a normal layer I understand that people have different approaches so it’s helpful to get another opinion

Maybe that'll be the next tutorial thing I do. I use multiply for shadows quite a bit, especially for areas with complicated patterns, but recently I've been doing the main shadows on a normal layer. In general I've recently been following this process: 1 - lineart 2 - separating the shadows from light: As I said, I've been doing this on a normal layers but can use multiply 3 - accent darks: basically emphasizing the darkest areas in the drawing (where light can't reach). I use a lot of heavy blacks in my lineart so in some cases the lineart itself does this 4 - halftones/highlights: I don't do too much with halftones as I go for a more graphic style, but I'll add a bit to soften up some areas like thighs and other fleshy parts of the body. Highlights I normally do on a hard light layer and likewise use sparingly. 5 - clean up: I sorta do this as I go but basically at the end just looking at the image as a whole and cleaning up any lines or areas that aren't looking right Writing this all out now I realize it's a lot and I probably should do a more proper write up on it lol. I'll try to get around to it!

Thanks for sharing! I was wondering if you’ll share on your coloring/painting approach as well in the future as these are very informative. If I may ask, I’m curious what your layer settings are (eg shadows are on multiply, everything is normal, etc)
