World Building: Designing Your Town
Added 2024-10-21 07:44:43 +0000 UTC
I have no idea if this video will be fun to watch, but it was fun to record :P Hope there's something useful in here!
Anyways- life is crazy for a second! I'll have to tell you about it soon!
I started doing some world building a little like this in blender. I made a bunch blobs for all the different districts and I just shift them around to see where I like them. I got a plan to build my city in cities skylines to get an idea of infrastructure placement and a more solid street layout

As a DM, I love hearing about how other people worldbuild. My main problem is knowing when to stop! Btw, two robots kissing is never a bad thing

Hey Ian!
Easily the best patreon I've ever supported. Amazing to watch you work, it's refreshing to see a results first approach and leveraging the tools to make them work for you. Inspiring way to learn so thank you for all your efforts with this stream of content. I'm giddy every time I see a 45 minute video upload!
Had a question, if you ever have had to confront lens distortion workflows in blender tracking and in compositing to make everything marry up with the lenses you're shooting on..or if it's never a concern? I'm talking STmaps and tracking drift due to lens distortions etc. seems like a rabbit hole and id be keen to see your two cents on it!
Appreciate you greatly, you're a rockstar of VFX circles and your narrative works with dynamo are fantastic and inspiring.

dear ian , i am a hobbyist , an intermediate blender idiot at best , But thanks to your projection node and all the other monster tuts , i got the courage to make a music video with three big chunks inside of blender , i am no expert or a VFX artist by profession but your tutorials gave us the hope that maybe we can pull this off, i am leaving a link below of the video we did , apart from the opening and the ending car shots , everything was done in blender and of course ,except chroma key and later graded in resolve. This is nothing close to what pros pull off but the results were satisfying ..thanks to you for what you do for the community

Agreed! Just watching Ian build a "fun thing" on the fly, even if it's something he's done before, is an amazing pleasure!

Nice vid. I like the process of just creating a world starting out with a map or flowchart or whatever, it can be such a relaxing and cosy way to get started.

So many great insights on how to go about world building - and creating the map in Blender and shape it into what is needed and to feel out which area of the map will create focal points for the story - that is an excellent idea. Very inspiring!

haha, wow -- around 7:45, you say "Sometimes I'll read a book ... and you go, how can *one person* have written this thing? This is incredible!"
I started a list, a couple years back, of artists who make me feel this way, called "artists that just do not seem imitable". douglas adams is my go-to example. it's not one of my longer lists, only has five artists on it. and I just went to the list to add a link to that timestamp in this video, and it looks like the last time I edited the list, some seven months ago, was to add *your* name, but with the qualifier: "but also, something about his work feels aggressively accessible."
and I can't tell you how much I appreciate that! this video, but also all of your patreon work, is a peek behind the curtain that inspires the crap out of me. I feel that wonder, like, "how does one person come up with all this depth", and then I get to watch you do it and it makes me want to just go try it for myself. it's so rare for me to find an artist who makes me feel both of those things at once. thank you!

Yeah! Or even if it isn’t specifically “fun”, I think it’s gotta have *something* that makes it feel interesting enough to you that it needs to exist!

34:48 i think you unintentionally made the landscape into the profile of a horse. Definitely need to name places like the horses snout or the horses eye etc

Thanks Ian! really fun video. reminds me of how Julien Gauthier developed numenor for the rings of power. I have such trouble deciding on just one idea to devote a large personal project to. I feel like it has to be so extremely cool to outweigh the cost of putting off other projects. thanks for sharing your thinking process.

I really liked the part where you described how if a scene isn't inspiring fun, it's not a fun scene, and maybe reconsider the scene.

I was waiting for a merge and then remeshing and adding procedural noise displacement and voila! but that wouldn't serve the purppose of a schematic map and you'd have to beging modelling each building to the detail 😂

Ah yeah that's true!! I just also realized there wasn't any benefit to having them as separate objects anymore.
Ian Hubert
2024-10-21 09:52:53 +0000 UTC
you don't really need to join objects to use proportional editing, you can just select them all and enter edit mode, then activate proportional editing and move vertices, they will be afected even if belonging to different objects

The egg ghosts story is so good, it had to be in the video twice 🙌🏻.
Tbh that’s a very important video to watch for a concept artist, I’m happy you made it right when I am creating a worldbuiøding project 😅
