"Align Camera Track" feature - Compify

A quick explanation of the Align Camera Track feature of Compify, along with experimenting with some other steps (aligning HDRIs, sunlight, and separating the actor from the background) to get a shot ready for a digital extension!

On the GitHub I added a link to a working one. There’s a slight explanation. https://github.com/EatTheFuture/compify/issues/9

ompify cannot be used in Blender 4.3.2

Has anyone had the same issue as me? Everything seems to work perfectly until I attempt to bake lighting, then blender crashes. Cannot seem to fix this despite the changes I make (Bringing down samples, changing resolution, reloading footage, changing HDRIs). Is this just a limitation of my computer? Or is this something fixable?

or maybe your audio source is doubled in OBS idk

alberto habacuc rosales

i think the audio thing sounds like flanging (phasing) to me like two copies of the same audio source slightly off or not aligned correctly L+R (even doe your mic audio is mono) or two copies of your mic audio in your timeline

Mapamok!

Here's a quick tip for aligning a Blender sun with your footage's sun: If the sun is in the shot, like here, you can put the sun lamp right over the sun from the camera's perspective, and then point that lamp at the camera.

Robin Squares

did it happen suddenly during the recording?

Thomson van den Bakaj

Audio sounds like it somehow got doubled with very little latency which creates this phasing effect

Thomson van den Bakaj

This is great stuff and I can't wait to try Compify, but have you looked at using Meshroom? You can get a photoscan and tracked camera from the same footage already aligned.

pretty sure they don't ever let you near reactors if they were ever in service, they always tear those down when decommissioned. so Satsop most likely never ran. we have one of those here in Austria too, it got turned into a museum.

Hoping you make some "making a shot" full process videos off this new boat episode!

When adding a sun to match the hdri, blender has a built in addon to align the sun position with the time of day and location

AI video keying is what got me into machine learning in the first place, so I was pretty excited to see it make an appearance here. I remember seeing a Two Minute Papers video about the topic back in 2020 and thinking "gosh, it would be cool if I learned how this thing works and tried to recreate it", and that spiraled into many hours of courses and projects which ultimately resulted in me working in the AI field! In my opinion, AI keying is the *perfect* application of deep learning tech, because it *augments* and *streamlines* the creative process rather than attempting to *replace* the creator. Sure, we're all gonna get replaced by robots one of these days, but until then it's always nice when tools are created with the intention of *assisting* rather than *replacing*.

It's hard to overstate how excited I am about machine learning masking inside blender.

Ah the bane of us 360 camera HDRI shooters! The best solution I've seen is the Freewell ND Filter Holder for the Insta360 One R camera... but unfortunately Insta360 doesn't really sell that model anymore. I usually just film a gray card on-location when I shoot, paint out the sun in the HDRI, and replace it in Blender adjusting the strength to expose a virtual grey card to have the same exposure as the one I filmed.

InLightVFX (Jacob)

the alignment feature is similar to something I've been trying to add to blender: https://projects.blender.org/blender/blender/pulls/121977

This is so good! Ian, You are a god among VFX artists and Nathan is an absolute genius!

I love the addon Nathan made! I use it all the time and it works great. Also, I hope we will be able to see you make this scene in a small video series, I just love seeing you work out the litte designs and set extensions.

OwlWithA1ds

I 3D printed a little shell for my Theta to perfectly hold some ND film in place!

Zeke Faust

OMG please ask me if I was impressed

Ahmed Ali

Yeah, the HDRI's we got are not going to work for the sun part of things. We actually *can't* stop down the camera enough to expose for the sun--we'd need ND filters for a 360 camera for that. So instead I intentionally tried to place the 360 camera just out of direct view of the sun when capturing the exposures, with the idea that we'd do exactly what you did in this video and supplement with a Blender sun lamp. :-) It would be cool, though, to figure out a fast, practical, affordable solution for capturing HDRIs on set that include the sun.

oh gee wilicars
