Setting up a Drivable Rigid Body Bulldozer/Tank

Sort of a follow-up to "Rigid Body Stuff" a few months ago, but for basic vehicles! Should also be a good introduction to Rigid Bodies in general.

And here's the documentation for the Rigid Body Constraints.

Don't forget to save often! Hohoho.

I wonder where improving the rigid body system and constraints is on the development pipeline

Brad Fichter

while I love this, there's something inside me that feels unease, in 2024, the concept of baking starts to feel very wrong

Juan Romero

Great post. Looking forward to more content on this amazing patreon ;-)

You might want to revisit some of your older tutorials... Blender keeps changing at an amazing pace.

That simulation of the truck carrying the vending machine was super realistic with all the secondary motion!

Miko Dela

Hey Ian, just here to say thank you for all the amazing stuff you have been putting out since the beginning!! Might seem like nothing but hearing you got rid of that vending machine reminded me of a couple years back, when I discovered you and your art and the way you share how you do it, it goes without saying there was a real vibe into this learning session with you back then. Those warm fresh summer nights doing 3D for the first time, your videos in the background, completely sucked into the universe you've created with your art, and all those funny things like the vending machines were truly a part of this thing haha! I just wanted to thank you a lot for that thing you brought and those wonderful feeling you gave to me during the origins of a learning curve, I grew up in life thanks to your art and your patreon. This was 4 years ago, today doing films and 3D is my fulltime job, quite a long way happenned in between but I can't forget those feelings haha, almost nostalgic. Thanks!

Maxime Gérardin

Oooo... I'm feeling an urge to tackle the Overlander from Terrahawks:)

Destrier

Incredible!

Roman Kovalev

Three thousand frames of it falling into the abyss! Haha! Thanks for another great and incredibly informative video, Ian! It’s a lot to think about, but your examples really help my crocodile brain wrap around it all.

Joshua Carter

Entertaining and useful stuff as always!

Workbench

always great stuff thanks ian (ps new compify addon is brilliant)

Not Louiiis

I realized after I uploaded I never talked about that, yeah! You can either do exactly that, or (what I did on the rendered bulldozer shot) was I attached all my greebles to the base geometry and basically used all the original geometry like a bunch of empties (which I then put on another hidden layer).

Ian Hubert

So simple and amazing! For adding more detail to the model, do you just bake the physics and then add more geometry?

Connor Christensen

Use to literally know nothing about rigid bodies but here we are! Thank you

B#D

I love how "simple" it sounds, but it looks amazing. If you want it even more weighty, you slow the mech down, and lighten the debris, i wonder how a thick fluid sim would look amongst the microwaves. You could also instead of microwaves have those compressed car cubes, but i was thinking having something like a bathtub or random recognizable item (vendor parasol for example) could also sell the scale more. One bigger thing amongst the smaller things.

Jack_Wolfe

The problem with that is the engineering brain doesn’t know when to stop troubleshooting

Platyelf

This was a great one, thank you! 🙏

James Noellert

Haha! Yeah! I think that's why I like it so much- troubleshooting is more like "okay how would this actually work though?"

Ian Hubert

I am trying so hard to remember.

Ian Hubert

Would love to see another build modelling video too. Love watching the thoughts as you build a new machine in this world

Nicholas Cummins

YES! I updated an old mechish model so the panels and stuff used rigid bodies and it added SO much weight to it!

Ian Hubert

I don’t know if this is going to make the war between my engineering-oriented brain and blender brain come to a cease fire or an arms race

Platyelf

HELL YES! give me that industrial mech !

Jack_Wolfe

YES!

Ian Hubert

Okay, that whole physics section of blender was a big blind spot for me. But seeing this now and all its potential, opens up a whole new world for me 🤯 Thanks for adding more sleepless nights to my schedule 😁

Nikodem

anyone remember the rigid body hack where you had to use the game engine's dynamics and record everything to keyframes?

Ian Letarte

i hope the food was good

Chromfell

Sweet. Yeah I figured there was something already in the library that covers this. Thanks for the reply! 🤙🏻

Beau Stine

Oh thank you! Ah yeah! If you search for "Rendering", "Optimizing", "Compositing" or "Digital Extensions" I get into a bunch of it.

Ian Hubert

thank you, I have an interior of a aircraft cockpit that I need to crash, and this has solved so many problems for me,

Richard Cave

When I have objects passing through other objects, I scale everything up…a lot

Jason Ferguson

Hi Ian. Just want to say your content has been so helpful in learning Blender. Thank you. 🙏🏻 Would you by chance be able to do a video on your render settings and compositing techniques? Or is there already a video that exists for this subject?

Beau Stine
