Ideally there's enough extra stuff on there to keep them from feeling too copy-and-pastey.

The way I fix it so the asset preview faces the right way: temporarily rotate the objects to face forward apply that rotation. update the preview images. then rotate them all back to face upward. apply rotation again. but don't update the preview.
