VHS CHRISTMAS CAROL | Unedited Full Reaction

Comments

Hey, I know this is super last minute and you might not have time, but Starkid uploaded this week their 2024 VHS Christmas Carols. It's 3 stories instead of just a Christmas Carol and I thought Casper might really appreciate it. Do not hurt yourself, but it would be awesome if you could see the other stories and Casper could react to the music style since it really is remarkable

Allison Watts

Starkid has now posted their VHS Christmas Carols (with an s) on youtube. This version is from 2024 and has two extra stories besides a Christmas Carol. If you have the time I would like a reaction to that version. The other stories are great and that version of a Christmas Carol has some small differences (and a different actor for Scrooge). If you don't have the time for a reaction, I would recomment to just watch it yourself, cause it's amazing

Bettie Trapman

I was so happy when I saw that today! I've been looking all over recently for a way to watch or rent the full thing this season

Zippy

Just so you know, Starkid just uploaded VHS Christmas Carols to youtube, out of nowhere!

Lex Villagrán

I believe, a big part of there not being a big signature Starkid twist is, that VHSCC is (iirc) basically the only show Nick and Matt Lang wasn’t involved in creativly. This was very much Clark’s project that eventually became a starkid thing. I personally love both types of their shows, but in different ways, since they are generally so different.

Tomi

Can we also give it up and cheer for Dylan's arthritic/lightning-struck dancing during Christmas Electricity? My favorite bit of Fred's was clearly referencing his uncle at the party, but adding it to the chorus. It gave me the vibe of 'You're not here, but I wish you were.'

Kory Misun

Yes!! It's insane that Starkid has the one of the most faithful adaptations of anything and yet here we are

Robin

This and A Muppet christmas Carol are honestly the two most faithful adaptations of A Christmas Carol I've ever seen. So, the two people most expect to NOT be serious and both have music... are actually the two that cover the most plot points from the book. Such as, Scrooge losing the love of his life because of his greed... even simple things like there being multiple other ghosts that are condemned to roam the world when Marley leaves... the mention of Scrooge's time at school and how crappy his father was. The only point both leave out is the the two kids clinging to Christmas Present named Ignorance and Want and like.. Dickens WAS making a point with them but...it's a kinda heavy handed point and awkward. Though That is when The Ghost of Christmas Present retorts to Scrooge, "Are there no prisons? No workhouses?" When Scrooge asks if anything can be done to help them. So most versions instead just use Scrooge asking after Tiny Tim to give the Ghost the rebuttal of Scrooge's denying of the poor earlier. Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed watching you see this for the first time. I've loved this and make everyone watch it every christmas because people usually can't beg out of -45 minutes-. I'm so glad you watched this because Dylan as Scrooge can't be missed. It's genuinely just feel good fun and the consistent '80s vibes for why it's "VHS" Christmas carol is so well done.

Bethany S

This show has my favorite music starkid has ever written <3 I hope the two act versión sees a public release someday soon so more people can watch it

tinywitchfrogs

So happy you reacted to this and it brought you so much joy! It just makes you feel good and yes my cheeks hurt from watching you smiling and vibing through it. Unironically one of my favorite StarKid soundtracks ever. That Scrooge is an incredible song.

Mahkia

Correct

Mikey 12212

Was waiting for you to realize that's not Jon lol That's Clark Baxtresser, he wrote the music and is the musical director for a lot of their shows. You may recognize him from Firebringer. Knowing Lauren and Joey are married makes this show even better lol Mortius going from "I hate Junior so much" to "Aww, Tiny Tim!" shows Brian's range haha This show is just a vibe, a good one to put in the background while working.

logicaldreamer

… You might be the only valid rebuttal

Mortius

When we would go to plays with my grandma, we would leave before the bows because she would need to use the restroom and couldn't get through the crowds. It can take so long for the crowds to dissipate and there's normally a long line. I'd normally go back to the doorway once she got to the bathroom since my mom could help her People with mobility disabilities are the ones I find acceptable to leave during bows because otherwise a lot would have to wait until everyone else leaves and sometimes they can't wait that long

Allison Watts

Also only halfway in so maybe you figured it out later, but that's not Jon. That's Clark Baxtresser narrating. Also in Firebringer as the one who goes "fuck no, Zazz" when Lauren's character tries to hit on him.

Jennee

I'm still not sure which ghost is my favorite: Jaime, Jamie, or James.

Jennee

You summed it up perfectly - faithful to the classic story, but just NICE and FUN and you leave with your cheeks hurting from smiling.

Smee

In another reaction to this I saw, they mention Scrooge not recognizing future things is more explicit in the original books. Apparently he even sees his own dead naked body and he doesn't recognize it, or tries not to maybe.

Somedude Watchintv

I don't know if this will be controversial with other Starkid fans but That Scrooge is absolutely my favourite of their songs

Addy0302

I didn't get it at first either but the Ghost of Christmas present basically shocks Scrooge with Christmas Electricity and that explains his movements and sounds in that song.

Somedude Watchintv

The guy you can’t figure out how you know - AJ Holmes - He played the Starship captain from the video who was killed by Pincer in Starship!

Dave Ballinger

i think the solve it squad would be a fun one to watch, its got a christmas special (obviously would be a Next christmas thing) that i think is very fun and i think the tin can bros did an amazing job of it! (plus i am a Sucker for anything w joey and lauren in it)

Quentin

Yes I think our US friends forget sometimes that it’s a very American celebration that other countries don’t do 😂 But we love our turkey for Christmas

Dave Ballinger

So glad you reacted to this! It's chock full of bangers and so many mindblowing vocals, it's now my Christmas tradition to put the soundtrack on repeat every December! Slight nitpick, because I'm British and can't resist, Scrooge is English - he doesn't celebrate Thanksgiving so yeah, a turkey is our go-to for Christmas :P

Anna Lyons

UGH the Final Ghost’s vocalizations changing into Scrooge’s name always gives me full body chills. SUCH a good moment

Lindsey

You apologize but really you just vibing with the songs is already a good reaction so no worries. Also as much as I love Dylan as Scrooge, and I do, I do lowkey prefer AJs (Fezziwig/Donation Man here) version in the newer show that also added two more stories.

intrepiddragons

I CANT WAIT TO WATCH THIS SCREAMING CRYING THROWING UP

Skittles

This is such a fun show! This was actually my first exposure to Christmas Carol (we dont really celebrate Christmas where im from), ive heard about it before and was aware of the Christmas spirits but I never heard the story from start to finish and I had so much fun watching it. Then I watched the Muppets one and enjoyed it too. Also yes, stay for the bows! I usually clap and cheer until my hands hurt, and I still manage to get to talk and take pictures with the actors after. Sometimes I even get to say something while they are still on stage because I stayed after the bows

Etsie_99

I love this one soooooo much. I think its genuinely one of the best adaptations of the spirit and message of Christmas Carol. And it just makes me happy.

Atlas Richardson

It’s hard to place James Tolbert (the choreographer and Ghost of Christmas Present) because you haven’t seen him in a role this big yet! He played a few small roles in Black Friday, and I believe that’s the most you’ve seen of him so far! As someone who is a bit of a Scrooge (I don’t actively hate Christmas or anything, my family just never celebrated it so I don’t have a real attachment to any Christmas media and get fatigued super quickly when it’s EVERYWHERE), A VHS Christmas Carol is so special to me! The music goes so insanely hard, the pure joy and excitement of the cast is infectious, and the emotional beats land just right. Such a great show, I’m glad you’re enjoying it! Also Meredith as Marley is just. So gender.

Lindsey

yesss finally!! this is still my favourite thing starkid has made

scarlett

Oh my god I’m gonna cryyyy!! I love this one so much it’s legit always downloaded on my YT app and I’ll just put it on haha. Ahhh!!!

Broody Gaming

There's another show with some twists: VHS Christmas Carols, where this story and two more collide (The Gift of the Magi and The Little Matchstick Girl), it's really beautiful too, both had this way of leaving you with your heart full of love.

Lex Villagrán

Eee, exactly.

Kory Misun

I love VHSCC, the past year I traveled from Chile to Chicago to be for the first time in a StarKid show, and it was this show (the longer version), and I was so happy. In the longer version, has two more christmas stories, and in one of the stories Ali is the principal character.

LettyStar

You not recognising Ali is so funny

playing-the-Lady-Rebel

I hope that if Starkid re-releases the 2023 or 2024 versions you'll get a chance to watch it even if you don't end up being able to react since it's not permanently available on YouTube like their other works. As amazing as this version is, in 2023 they added another act to make this a full two-act musical, adding some other classic Christmas stories as the first act and it's just wonderful. Not just the music but also how they tie everything together, the casting choices for the dual roles is brilliant, and it's not just my favorite Starkid musical but quite possibly my favorite musical I've ever seen. No Dylan!Scrooge in those iterations, sadly, but AJ!Scrooge is wonderful in his own right

Tarika Chamberlain

Aj Holmes (fezzywig) was the captain from the crashed starship videos

Valentina Garcia

Priceless is one of my all-time favorite starkid songs! I still get chills every time I hear it.

nathalienathalie

If I had a nickel for every time Dylan Saunders was a depressed character singing about his lost love I'd have three nickels which isn't a lot but weird that it's happened thrice.

Takeyia Twitty

"You guys are getting a long video I don't care" gives AND NO ONE CAN STOP ME! vibes and I love it

Queen Nyx

They are giving it a break this year though. Meredith confirmed it

Dave Ballinger

Quote from Black Friday, “Your brother in law is a bit of a Scrooge isn’t he?” Paul talking about a character played by Dylan Saunders. The incidental foreshadowing!

Jayden Callaghan

you deciding to make it one video half way through is so relatable. This is so great

Fenix

Composer/Pianist is Clark Backstressor who was part of Firebringer and Spies are Forever.

Brittany Shaw

My favorite Starkid show to date. There is no quantifying the amount of hype in my system. Let's do this. You're right, this show isn't too deep or different compared to any other Christmas Carol we've seen. It's just based in the era of VHS, hence the title. We've got workout ladies, dance hotties, and diva harbingers of doom. With luck, this show will be put on every year for the rest of this crew's lives (they swore on camera). Meredith has the best vlogs relating to this show, I adore them. Sadly Jon isn't in this show, but I can imagine he'd bring so much to the scenes. I believe the ethereal Clark Baxtresser wrote this masterpiece (and was the angelic Narrator)! Commenters correct me if necessary. <3 Can we also give it up and cheer for Dylan's arthritic dancing during Christmas Electricity? Whispers: Now we just have to wait for Casper to be shown this.

Kory Misun

That’s not Jon, that’s Clark, he wrote the musical

Phoebe D

watching this show for the first time ever with you aahh cant wait (im loving all the starkid content <3)

týr

That is Clark Baxtresser as the Pianist/Narrator. He played Clark the hot tribesman in Firebringer and has been involved musically in a lot of their productions. As well as writing the music for Ani with his band TalkFine

Dave Ballinger

the people in the Grinch are (tmk) actually called the "Whos"

Fenix

One of the best adaptations of Christmas Carol

Dave Ballinger

Thank you Kaleigh

Marel

Genuinely maybe one of my favorite starkid musicals. I love their newer version as well but this is one of the maybe two starkid shows where I will never skip any of its songs.

Cheryl Caballero

was about to go to sleep but nevermind LET'S GO

EngelDraws

YESSS THIS IS MY FAVORITE STARKID PRODUCTION. I am **SO** excited for this.

Aliyah

just re-watched and finished one of your other videos when getting the notification; perfect timing

Fenix

OMG YES IVE BEEN WAITING!

MaiYAH

JUST SQUEALED WITH EXCITEMENT!! I love this show so much!

Amanda Askin

Oh my God. Yes I've been waiting for this
