The Odyssey - Overly Sarcastic Productions

Comments

Mathematically, “most of the crew” can be qualified each time. 600 men, 350 is most. 250 men, 105 is most. So on until there’s only 3.

I am always delighted to see people experience OSP!! And they have a penchant for greek mythology so you could learn a bunch of cool fun facts. the poseidon video and the persephone video are WILD!

Swan

So happy and surprised to see a reaction to this! I watch them ALL the time, this is like seeing a niche fandom thing in the wild. Absolutely overjoyed.

vangogh_green

A fun more story intensive thing to watch from OSP would be their Detail Diatribes, Red and Blue spend between 40 minutes to a couple hours on a topic with a slide show. I believe the shortest one is one about Castlevaina specifically about “You Must be the Belmont.”

Nicolas Jones

This was really fun! I Love OSP and would love to see more of your reactions to them. Idk if it would be of interest to you but the Sun wukong series is a lot of fun

Matt Mayhem

Okay so in the original there are different interpretations of whether he intended to sacrifice the 6 men to scylla. Some of them say she just ate them without him intending it to happen, and some say that he chose to only sacrifice 6 crew, versus the many more that would have died if he sailed by charybdis than if he had by scylla

Ratatosk Clarke

There are… a decent amount of story beats that was changed that I think would have been more interesting left in and would have HELPED with the pacing issues epic has

Ratatosk Clarke

In the og myth circe and Odysseus have an actual child while he’s on the island for a year lol.

Ratatosk Clarke

I could write a whole essay (and may) about the changes epic made and which ones were narratively satisfying and which ones I thought were less so. I REALLY love the odyssey and greek mythology and getting to talk about it is my favorite thing ever.

Ratatosk Clarke

I will say, their pronunciation of Telemachus is closer to the accurate way to say it than in epic. Τηλέμαχος is pronounced Te-le-ma-kho-s (χ , called chi, is a voiceless aspirated velar stop if you have any linguistics knowledge but if you dont, its like a german back of throat hggg sound, mixed with a k. So kh!)

Ratatosk Clarke

I do 100% recommend you read the Odyssey! I think engaging with it may be incredibly fun for you since you already care about the story so much. If you do, I recommend reading the translation by Emily Wilson! (Or if in 20 years I come out with my own translation you should read that one hehe. I am an ancient greek nerd who is going to school for it <3)

Ratatosk Clarke

You would love all of the miscellaneous myths! My fave was always Eros and Psyche

Cara Griffiths

For other videos by OSP I recommend the Iliad and their Journey to the West series (Sun from RWBY was inspired by Sun Wukong from this story). Also Medea bc who doesn’t love a powerful morally gray sorceress.

YESSSSSS OSP THE MONARCHS OF STORYTELLING AND HISTORY!!! I recommend literally anything they've ever done (though admittedly Red's old Shakespeare summaries would be a bit left field for you), but in particular the Iliad, The Trojan War Saga (different video, covers many more sources telling the story from the inciting incident of the Trojan War through the end of every Acheaen king's return home), and most/all of Red's Miscellaneous Myths, obviously the Greek ones would be the most on-brand place to start but she's covered a lot more including Egyptian, Norse, Sumerian, Aztec, Japanese, and more.

Dani

You should check out their video on The Illiad if that interests you 😀

Jacob Minger

You should react to some of MythicTunes' songs about the epic

Void Weaver

You did fine, lots of people enjoy reactions without the analysis side. OSP is a pretty big channel, this could explode 🤣 Red does Trope Talks that could play more into your story telling expertise, if you are looking for a more familiar direction to go in.

Ashley Evers

OSP have a bunch of really good videos with a decent amount of variety. There's more Greek and other global mythology videos, history videos, and their trope talks going over common tropes in media which I'm quite fond of. I don't think you could go wrong with whichever one looks interesting to you, honestly.

NiamhJP03

If you want something musically related from OSP, the video "Telemachus's Mom" was released by the channel for April Fools this year and is amazing.

Thelon

There is SO much from OSP to check out, just literally do whatever catches your eye! I'd love to see any and all further reactions you do for their content.

ShatterDoll

I love this. I don't really know what to suggest from OSP but... all their stuff is amazing. Red and Blue are great and it was hilarious watching you watch it. Red (the one narrating this) really gets into analyzing literature but glossed over this a bit because... well, it's a LONG BOOK. Like she left out the bit where Odysseus also kills... all the female slaves that had ever slept with the suitors DESPITE THE FACT THAT THEY LIKELY HAD NO CHOICE. And yes, in the original, Odysesus absolutely 100% sleeps with Circe and Calypso. With Calpyso, it IS depicted as a little more unwilling and he does want to go home...but it's also 7 years and she's all "Let me make you immortal" so it's hard to say whether he's just more commitment adverse or what. The issue is Calypso's story picks up after he's been there seven years, so we don't know if he was all in at the beginning and THEN was like "Ooookay, well, this is no longer a dalliance.." or....what. Circe, however, he was totally in for and she was EARLIER so he felt no guilt whatsoever about cheating on his wife there. The difference between Circe and Calypso is Calypso tried to KEEP him in the original Greek. As far as Scylla - Odysseus ABSOLUTELY knows the cost. Circe tells him. She literally bluntly says it's better to lose six men than his whole boat. He DOES make a choice there. It's less dramatic than the musical, but he does not tell his men. He does actually TRY to defend them though in the original story even though he did know it would happen. Circe had told him not to even bother, but he still tried. That counts for something. I'm NOT an Odysseus fan. one of my thesis papers for my master's was basically "This is why Odysseus sucks" but I'll give him credit for the hard and VERY DIFFICULT choice when it came to Scylla and that he totally armed himself and tried and just FAILED to protect them. ETA: Also, Penelope is a badass and I feel like I've never seen an adaptation of the story that emphasizes it. She kept a hold of a throne for 20 years (Ten years at Troy, Ten years for him to get home), managing not to remarry, all to keep it safe for her SON. She still had to make sure the country didn't fall apart. She had to stall with a bunch of obnoxious suitors. Then when Odysseus gets back? She DOES do the test with the moving the bed. Not because she's trying to prove to him that he's still the guy she married, but because she's like "Nope... nooooo, I trust none of this divine BS that's been going on. He might not even be human. He could be a god - maybe Zeus is having fun. Maybe he's a shapeshifter.. NOPE. I'm testing it." which. A+ to her. Most genre-savvy character in the entire story.

Haven't finished watching yet, but can confirm: watching you have to pause the video because you're laughing too hard is EXACTLY the kind of content I'm here for. I love your analyses as well, but sometimes just a reaction is also good!

Gabriel the Sorcerer

OSP’s “Miscellaneous Myths” is really good, especially the longer videos. If you’re worried about not being able to react as well, one option could be to do this as a Patreon-exclusive series, which would have less pressure to add more to the videos. Either way, awesome video! Can’t wait to see what’s next.

Ivey

Love this! Please do their Trojan War, and Iliad ones!

Nina The Ravenclaw

I will say that Red has since stopped doing myth videos like this about a year ago, so it doesn't really give good insight into the stuff they're posting now. A lot more literary and history analysis now

Allison Watts

Their Journey to the West Series is soo funny

Temmiehoi

Highly recommend Hades and Persephone's evolution from OSP! A beautiful representation of how they became the cthonic gods we know them as.

Eodair

seeing someone go BLIND into an OSP video is wild

Excelsius

Love OSP so much! Been watching their stuff since high school

Allison Watts

Doing OSP stuff? Let's go? I LOVE their work. Red is great. Tho she's always said her earlier videos like this aren't as good. You 100% should watch their collection of Greek myth videos. They're REALLY cool!

River

Yessss I love OSP, my favorite is the Persephone one
