NEXT TO NORMAL 2 | I Miss The Mountains thru I'm Alive

(I Miss the Mountains/It's Gonna Be Good/He's Not Here/You Don't Know/I Am the One/Superboy and the Invisible Girl/Open Your Eyes/I'm Alive)

Comments

If you actually realize what's happening with Dr. Madden, I'll feel silly pointing it out, but she's imagining/hallucinating him like that because Dan said "They say he's a real rock star" (ie he's really really good at what he does), and so she's... SEEING a rock star.

Magnus Taliesin

Brings whole new meaning to "Why does he hate me?" "Because you're a complete loser" and making him run and hide when Dan appears. Anyone who's seen this all the way through before and wants to see it again, watch it from the perspective of Diana in service of Dan as his coping mechanism. She keeps his pain away from him by taking it entirely into herself. Suddenly you see a whole additional show within the one you already watched. Watch what happens to Dan every time she leaves.

I always wanted to yell at the mother in this song when I was younger that because of her, her daughter knows what it’s like to live half alive cause she buried her daughter to save the idea of her son. She knows what it’s like to wish she died because that was the only way to convince her mother she was alive. She lost her son and murdered her daughter for the crime.

Reader Minion

This is my favourite musical and the realization is one of my favourite parts. There is so much good about this show, but it all comes back to that moment.

KennDemon

I just want you to know that I have a trip planned to New York in September and after the announcement I was like oh I could go see Hadestown, only to find out he’s scheduled not to perform on the dates I’m going to be there. I’m still going to see it cause it’s an incredible show, but I’m so bummed.

Alexis Billinge

I’ve known this show since high school (more than a decade now) and I have my own thoughts, theories, opinions, memories and experiences with it. Since the pro-shot was released I’ve seen many reactions to it, and each one is different from the other. This show is so personal, that it feels like every person sees it with completely different eyes. I always feel like I re-discover it whenever I watch a new reaction. Thank you for sharing this with us <3

ShayOhMy

Alice Ripley is phenomenal, but she is very much what I would consider "classic broadway". Where it almost seems like they were more focused a singer being a powerhouse and having a perfect technique, rather than us being able to hear the emotion in the song. NO SHADE TO THE OG DIANA. I got to see her live and she is AMAZING.

Kerri Kortness

Just so you know, I don't think the therapist is doing home visits; they’re going to an office for the sessions.

Kal

Honestly check out Aaron Tveit as Gabe in general

Kerri Kortness

There is a reason that You Don't Know/I am the One was the scene performed at that year's Tony Awards. I REALLY recommend checking out that performance.

Kerri Kortness

Caissie Levy's Diana is just... phenomenal. i get why the director envisioned her for the West End production when he listened to the original broadway rendition of I Miss the Mountains. Jamie Parker's Dan is nothing short of heartbreaking and beautiful. it always makes me smile when people compliment his performance.

atria

I just wanted to hug you and I completely understand what you are saying. I am physically disabled and mainly bed bound, I never realised how it effected my daughter until we had an argument and she said I don't want to be like you and end up with this and pushed my wheelchair over. We talked and she said that not only did she have stress with end of year and auditioning for performing arts unis , and the fear of letting us down she also feared because my condition is genetic that she could end up like me and that because performing is her life she hated that thought. We now chat a lot more and we have helped her through the stress and said that whatever happens with auditions ect that we will always be there for her and support her.

Liz Lilliman

The most shocking thing in this video is that you’ve never heard I’m alive as someone that is aware of musicals generally (<-joke). I swear that broadway(dot)com video of Aaron Tveit singing it was EVERYWHERE after the les mis movie came out

itsmiira

one of the things that gets me abt this portrayal of Dan is how hard he’s trying. he reaches, but very rarely grabs. he tries to get low and stay as non-threatening as possible in you don’t know/I am the one. he helps her put away dishes. he’s not perfect, but he’s just trying so hard to be there for Diana in any way she’ll let him. but for a lot of reasons, she just can’t let him.

Fae

Yeah, that comment was a bit odd but I forget he watches these in pieces and not the whole show in one go. Past productions have made Dan an obvious villain, whereas Jamie, the actor portraying Dan here, makes him much more human and endearing. Natalie is a heartbreaking character, and Diana’s story is so close to home for me. Henry is not necessarily a bad influence, and this will become evident as the story unfolds.

Mara Saunders

Well said- and it’s right up his alley!

Mara Saunders

I’m so glad because I discovered this show recently and watched the pro shot just last week! Diana’s new psychiatrist is described by her husband as “a real rockstar”, so Diana perceives him AS a rockstar!

Mara Saunders

I was waiting for him to find out. It is still a gut punch. I also love the fact that, staging wise, it grows dark, with no colors and very intimate and muted lighting.

MissDisneyChick

I don’t really have much to say other than, boy oh boy, does this show hit uncomfortably close to home. It is so real and unflinching, and I’ve never seen anything else that resonates with my experience with mental illness quite this much. So anyways, 44:25. Have you seen the musical episode of Scrubs? Because you just gave a summary of the musical episode of Scrubs. If you haven’t seen it before, you absolutely should. If you need something light to watch while you take your breaks from this, it might be a nice reprieve (it stands pretty well on its own if you haven’t seen the rest of the series)

Lindsey

LOL MORTIUS IT'S BECAUSE DAN SAID THE DOCTOR WAS A ROCK STAR. I LOVE YOU

JT Brockmann

Also, "three people at work know I'm nuts?" sometimes people take that to mean Dan's talking about Diana to his coworkers, when the reality is more "I don't sit at work waiting for the phone to ring" bc she was having episodes so often or so badly he'd get called at work, and thus, his coworkers know something is up with his wife It makes me really happy to see you not immediately jumping to villanize Dan. In the obc it was a loooot easier bc of how people played him, so make him out to be a worse guy than he is. Jamie really humanizes him as the husband who is also suffering alongside his wife.

Shiloh

Back again to mention The Son when Diana says "I think I'll re-tile the roof" 😂 he lunges, grabs her and redirects her. So aside from being a delusion, he's also a form of self defense and preservation for Diana, a subconscious part of her trying to keep her safe during her mania😭🎂❤️

Shiloh

Honestly this musical sent me down such a spiral, it's the kind of thing you can watch multiple times and still find new things/interactions that you didn't see the first time. I watched this with some friends and called that the brother had passed and wasn't real but it hit so hard. Then going back and hearing all the hints and seeing him not interact with anybody just made me truly appreciate this musical and their acting.

BlissfulHope

If I’m remembering right I think there used to be more moments like this in earlier versions to make it a little clearer what was happening, but the rockstar one was just the only one that made it to the final version of the show. I seem to remember one where Dan turned up to help when she was in distress and Diana called him ‘the cavalry coming over the hill’ only for him to turn into a cowboy for a moment?

playing-the-Lady-Rebel

“I don’t think there is a good character in this show” boy is that a harsh statement they are all trying so incredibly hard especially Nat she is a kid who has had to walk on egg shells her whole life she is absolutely good she’s frankly incredible for what’s left but why can’t trying your hardest be good

Dragonscalesofold

The way the musical choice for The Son ™ to take the main melody and Natalie to take the harmony in the last chorus of Superboy and the Invisible Girl has been living rent free in my head for like 13 years

Katy

31:33 if Im completely honest I think I needed this musical last year. As Ive had my own fair share of mental health issues ontop of my neurodivergency. I missed every warning sign that my subconscious was trying to give me last year, and the most anyone ever picked up on was me with drawing in, as if it was normal. I found 63 poems i wrote between the end of 2023 and early last year... ... ... i believe them all to be me trying to wave the red flag at myself. Not a fun self reflection healing 1 year later. And yeah, uh no support network never had one.

Seraphina Stardust

He literally pushes her into 2nd voice - the composer was insane for that!

Anna Schmidt Meum

definitely take this one at your own pace, its a rough one. Thank you for sharing it with us though and ill be thinking about fixed does not mean better for a while

Graves Edgar

When skipping through you missed one of my favourite lines that means so much in context, in the first song the on sings "It only hurts when im here"

Graves Edgar

Also a lot of people talk about how Natalie is let down by her mother, but I find her relationship with her father to be incredibly interesting. He's only there for her until Diana needs help, and then he's gone. It's not indicative of him being like a horrible parent, but its still going to impact Natalie a lot to feel like an spectator in her own family.

Ratatosk Clarke

What I think is so cool about superboy and the invisible girl is that it isnt truly a solo for Natalie. When she tries to be heard her mother dismisses her, and then when she tries to warn her that shes on the edge, her voice is overpowered by her brother's.

Ratatosk Clarke

I miss the mountains being me literally going to try yet another something tomorrow bc being numb isn't the solution, but being unmedicated isn't either 🤔

Shiloh

I AM SO EXCITED FOR THIS PART. I will be commenting more as I watch ✨✨✨

Shiloh

Highlight of my week on a Monday? Yes please

Elle

As someone who grew up with a mentally ill mother, I deeply relate to Natalie. ( the daughter ) I want to prevent some perspective on why you might see her use some harsher language in regards to Diana's struggles that isn't super touched on in the show. Growing up with a mentally ill parent, you lose out on a big part of your childhood. You have to learn not only how to take care of yourself, but take care of the person who's supposed to be taking care of you. This can lead to feelings of resentment or bitterness (and then guilt about feeling those feelings but that's a whole other demon) as you get into your teenage years and you start learning more on what a normal family dynamic is supposed to look like and what you've missed out on. Especially if you don't have a good support system or outlet.

Me, who works in child welfare: Wow I’m having a hard day today but when Mortius just posted Next To Normal so I’ll have a little reward for getting through it Me, clocked out and after a 30 minute cry: Whew, time for next to normal Me, vibing. Peaceful. Pretty alright mentally, enjoying this vid. Mortius: Fixed does not mean better. Me, starts sobbing again. (Seriously though, thank you so much- it made my day just a little bit better ❤️)

Bailey Schmidt

/That's/ why the son said his dad hated him and pretended he wasn't there...! Excuse me for a minute or an hour, that's a lot.

Kory Misun

"It's the seventh day this week I've sat til morning, imagining the ways you might have died" are Diana's opening lines of the show. Just in case you needed another reason to cry.

Smee

Also, as you scrubbed back through the first scene, recontextualizing it post-reveal, you paused right before the son singing "it only hurts when I'm here" and Diana singing "it only hurts when he goes"; like MANY other lines, they hit insanely different once you /know/.

Bennett

Seeing you react to the reveal before He's Not Here was exactly what I hoped it would be. Your flabbers were absolutely gasted.

Bennett

I'm here for the Tom Hooper slander or whatever his name is

Nahi

Superboy and the invisible girl was the first song i heard too when I was 17. This was the first "modern" and "real" musical i discovered that wasnt some big showstopper like Phantom or Wicked. As a girl in a dysfunctional household i related to Natalie so much. The thing with the Therapist is because Dan called him a "Rockstar" and put it in Diana's head. Tbh, in the OG they highlighted it a little bit better, plus the actor doesnt scream "Rockstar" to me even though he killed those vocals.

logicaldreamer

You can't remember the son's name because we actually haven't heard it yet! Another one of those subtle hints that something weird was going on with him.

Makayla

i didn't get the reason for the scene with her and her new therapist either until i heard dan say "he's a rockstar" which, i assume in her manic delirium, diana took a little literally lol

Zep

okay okay superboy and the invisible girl is so good but also HE STEALS THE MELODY IN HER OWN SONG i can’t handle it it emotionally destroys me every single time

ariona leilani

oh hi, I'm your Australian twin who is also curled up in bed with food poisoning after leaving work early yesterday afternoon
