I’ve read some of the books, which was kind of fun in terms of knowing where some of the plot *might* go, knowing a little about characters beforehand. But there are a lot of changes, and I didn’t watch the entire tv show so I actually don’t know where things go!
But tbh the writers of this show have more talent than the writer of the book series, which was very much a romance series and had all the trappings of that genre. Wonderful world building, interesting characters, mostly fuckin. I think making the show more horror in aesthetics with the romance still potentially the main drive of the plot made the whole world more interesting, and the character realization/development in the show is absolutely comprehensive where it was not like that in the books. I think I read four or five of them when I was working in a bookstore and getting stripped copies (when a mass market paperback doesn’t sell, it is more cost effective to destroy the book than ship them back to the publisher so they just rip the covers off to prevent resale and at the bookstore I worked for, you could take home something like 5 stripped books a week lol)

I was just thinking if it was Frank watching this I’d be losing it every time he skipped the intro song. It’s such a good tone setter! You need it to transport you.

I love how they’re not afraid to make her “ugly”. She gets hurt and that means she has a big nasty swollen black eye for the next few episodes. She doesn’t just limp around for a couple of minutes, she’s visibly injured and it affects her.

I love the way Sookie is written. There is a tendency for female protagonists (especially in horror style genre fiction) to be either an invincible action hero or else a helpless damsel in distress. Sookie is smart, brave and strong. She is a hero but a believable one (in a fantasy environment ofc), her reactions and behavior is realistic. And she makes mistakes that cause injury and misfortune occasionally, but never in a way that detracts from how smart and tough she really is.

One of my favorite things is jamming out to the theme song with you (for all the shows I watch haha). So many creators skip them in their reactions, and I get why, my husband does it too. But I always want that place setting in my mind and the song is usually the best way.

So, interest fact, it WAS originally supposed to be Lafayette who was in the trunk. I haven't read the books(which are a lot different from the show), but I believe that it's him that's found dead in the books. But Lafayette was so popular, basically being the fan favorite, they decided to change it to keep him, which is probably one of the best decisions the show ever made. I've seen dudes that I knew were homophobic on social media, loving Lafayette lol...
Also, interesting(if no one's mentioned it yet), Nelson Ellis(Lafayette) and Rutina Wesley(Tara) were actually great friends in real-life before they did the show together. They had went to Julliard together, if I'm not mistaken(I remember a funny story Nelson told one time about how Rutina got stopped by cops back in college while they were hanging out because they thought she was a hooker because of what she was wearing lol). Explains why they have probably the best chemistry dynamic in the series and it helps make it super believable that they're actually cousins. They play off each other very well, especially since some of Lafayette's lines are often, which means some of Tara's lines when they're together too. I always loved how natural they felt from the moment you saw them together in just casually cussing each other out and chatting behind the bar. Weirdly enough, Rutina Wesley wasn't who they originally cast for Tara. Even though I like the actress who they originally had(who's name I can't remember at the moment), they made the best choice ending up with Rutina...
