And when the teens were swimming in the lake, doesn't one of the tell a story about a woman who died in the lake? And someone jokes around and pulls one of the girls underwater??

Yes, that is Peter's actor's son! The casting is amazing for this show, and most of the actors playing younger or older versions of characters aren't related to each other, but in this case, he is Peter's actor's son!
Edit: you figured it out but I'm leaving this comment haha

I'll say this, I find the overall story of Ulrich and Katharina so very lonely and sad.
Katharina's mother was strict because of her own experiences as a young child and early pregnancy and hated her for her own mistakes. She treated her like she was an evil from her own sins. She beat her and resulted in her having a fairly unloving homelife as a young person. She found love with Ulrich and grew with him, got married, had their children and was happy, until she found that Ulrich was cheating on her with Hannah. She would have previously felt like she'd escaped that unloving life, only to be plunged back into it.
Once she ends up wrapped up in this particular mystery, she goes back, finds out her husband had done everything he could to find their son, and paid the price by being stuck in the past, wasting away but still trying is best to find his son, but always blocked at every pass; getting so close when he escaped.
Once Katharina finds Ulrich in the past she leaves him with hope that she'll get him out and she'll be back, but it actually turns out she's murdered by her slightly unhinged mother who thinks she's her aborted child come back to haunt her. The penny gets lost in the sand and makes it way to Martha after being handed to Katharina's mother by Hannah.
Ulrich never sees Katharina ever again, left to wait in futility for her, never knowing what became of her. Katharina died and no one knew it was her. Ulrich would have died at some point, with no one really knowing it was him - one question would have been, when he died, did Mikkel know and did he ever visit because he KNEW his dad was actually in the mental institution? Otherwise he disappeared into obscurity again, too.
Such a lonely, and horrific story between the two of them just trying to find their kid.
