I was so confused by this. Episode until I figured out why. There is an episode that aired after season 3 and before season 4. Its title is The Abominable Bride.

Sherlock acts like an idiot, taking uncalculated risks for no reason taunting the old lady and is completely oblivious to the danger of the situation, which makes zero sense for his character. The death feels cheap and unearned, like it's just there for shock value.
