Ulrich seeing his son (and shortly later all his other kids) after he waited so long and had gone through so much to try and find him and he succeeded, but for what? How awfully futile it would have felt. Mikkel, too lost him just as quickly, probably lost hope of ever getting back. He'd have just drifted through life while his newly adopted mum drugs him, probably contributed to his rapidly developing mental health issues.
