Snow didn't just screw up by putting Katniss back in the arena. It was all the Victors. People in the Capital get attached to the Victors (in a way that don't to the Tributes). So, finally, the people in the Capital were actually truly sad about the deaths. That was miscalculation, because it made the Capital citizens start to (at least internally) question the brutality of the Games. It was suddenly people they knew personally that were in danger and that hadn't happened in any previous games.

When I first read these books, I was in college (bout 14 years ago, jeez), and even the book snob in be had to bow down to this series. I was ROCKED. Brilliantly written, brilliantly executed. When it's not the raw emotion for the state of this dystopian world, it's the deep investment you have for katniss, peeta, and all the other characters in this thing. It's been a very long time that such a world had me so on edge, because anything could go left--I couldn't expect an outcome for anything. You know how you feel like a main character has instant immunity in a story because they're the main? They're usually invincible. I was legitimately scared for Katniss' life from the beginning. Also, reading the books, I was team Peeta hard. He's such a strong character. Anyways, I'm rambling. So so happy I stumbled on your reactions. It's so fun to relive these movies with you. <3

2025-11-09 16:55:08 +0000 UTCI KNEW you’d love these but I didn’t anticipate how in classic Taco fashion you’d be putting it all together so quickly. The Plutarch call was iconic (RIP Phillip Seymour Hoffman). So much of the power of these movies comes from the honestly superstar talent cast. Haymitch and Effie and Caesar and Plutarch and Snow, plus pretty much every Victor who matters narratively— everyone is so incredible and elevate what’s already such a strong concept/story. This is gonna sound like such a random follow-up rec but if you haven’t seen it, the 2004 Pride and Prejudice would be a really fun watch once you’ve finished these. The actors who play Johanna and Snow are both in it (much younger obvs) and it fucking S L A P S. Westworld would also be so fun, the actor who plays Beetee (who was also in TLOU 👀, not sure if you clocked that) and an actor who will show up on True Blood pretty soon (🤫) are also in that. Catching up slowing but surely, can’t watch till I have enough free time for Mockingjayyyyy ❤️
