I was one of the people that watched season 2 as it aired and had to wait for season 3, and there are a ton of little references to the fan base throughout this episode. All of the theories about him being alive and how he pulled it off (Anderson ranting about it, groups of fans getting together to discuss theories), that was all a direct reference to fans of the show that did the same, then two lines from the show were taken word-for-word from the fandom: "I believe in Sherlock Holmes" was something fans started saying shortly after S2E3 aired, and "not dead" was a joke from fans about how Sherlock might reveal that he's alive to John (so there would be like a cartoon-style gif with the text #NotDead showing Sherlock popping out from behind a bush to surprise John, stuff like that). I'm gonna be honest, it made me not love the episode. It took me out of the story with all of the aggressive over-the-top winks to the audience
