When Michelle says "ride" in reference to a guy, she's saying he's fuckable.

The Irish really dislike the English and I’m sure that’s why they’re so harsh with James.
A long history between the Irish and English.

Slang key - Wain/s = child, teenager, young ones. Boke = vomit/get sick. Ride = hot, attractive. Stall the ball = hold the phone. Fanny = vagina (not bum as i think it does in the States). Limey is kind of a derogatory term for a British person. Like calling an Irish person a Paddy. And i just noticed in the subtitles when Michelle orders her food from Fionnula she asks for a large curry butty (sandwich) but the subtitles say "large cowboy"! Also, the reason they give James such a hard time is because he's English and the show is set in the 90s when there was a lot of trouble up north because of the British Army in the north of Ireland. England colonised Ireland and kept the 6 counties up north even after the rest of the country gained it's independence. So there was a lot of bombing and violence etc between the British occupying army and the IRA (Irish Republican Army). Generally, Protestants formed the majority up north and most of them were loyal to the British government and wanted to remain part of the UK. There were less Catholics who were mostly Irish and wanted to be part of the Republic. Catholics were treated as second class citizens mostly - lived in poorer areas, had less opportunities, less jobs etc. The families in the show are Catholics and don't care much for the English so that's why James is the butt of every joke. Nowadays it's more peaceful up north but there's still a lot of talk about them becoming part of the Republic (a United Ireland), but there would still be a lot of people who want to remain part of the UK. Oh and Gerry, the dad, is from the south, the Republic of Ireland which is why his accent is very different. He's also played by a very funny comedian called Tommy Tiernan.
