In the original story she wasn’t a bad actor, she just tried to accomplish her ultimate goal: be able to marry for love. Sherlock was the one who sided with a sketchy guy and underestimated her. She didn’t need help from anyone to fool Sherlock. And obviously she didn’t need to be saved in the end. That was an unexpected story for a dude from the Victorian era to write. However, Moffat doesn’t really understand how to make a clever spin on a female character. She just has to be sexualized and has to fall in love with Sherlock, and has to be beaten and then saved by him. I forgot how upsetting this episode was for me.

2025-08-21 17:19:42 +0000 UTCJohn always seemed defensive about being seen as gay from the start, it might one of his more childish behaviors (when he’s comparably far less childish than Sherlock). I sometimes wonder if it comes from some complicated experience of growing up with a gay sister, in a possibly homophobic environment? John’s knee jerk reaction to ppl assuming he’s queer tells me that his codependent relationship with Sherlock was not the start of him being perceived that way…whether it’s rooted in childhood experience or from when he was in the military idk. I was laughing so hard when John says “I’m not actually gay” but Irene responds “Well, I AM…and look at us both”. I remember when the show premiered, I didn’t love that they chose to make Sherlock’s rare romantic entanglements be a lesbian and a seemingly straight man, but it’s certainly interesting! Though a lesbian sex worker with majority male clients is actually more common irl than you’d think (esp bcuz sex worker is still work & real attraction doesn’t matter, it’s a performance which can even be easier without that element)…so points for realism there. I think Sherlock & Irene have more of a mental attraction to each other that’s based on shared intelligence, excitement & admiration. The relationship between Sherlock & John strikes me as a different sort of attraction, they balance each other like long-term partners. Your yin-yang comment kinda sums it up.

2025-08-20 15:44:52 +0000 UTCI understand that whole “Sherlocked” reveal is very poetic, romantic and all that but in the novel she outsmarted Sherlock till the end. THAT is why he calls her The Woman. Because she’s the only person who did that. That’s why personally I don’t really like that plot twist. Here it almost seems that the writers told the audience “well, she’s a woman after all, of course she would make a mistake in a romantic situation”. But in reality she should always be able to outsmart everyone, including Sherlock, despite her feelings.
