Something very interesting about the vampires in Buffy is that Joss Whedon really wanted them to be purely evil and was very resistent to adding in Angel as a character or anything else that would bring them out of that black and white territory. He's quoted as saying he didn't want "any of that Anne Rice shit," so most everything that we are TOLD in exposition moments is in line with that initial idea. However, as the series progresses what we're SHOWN actually has a lot more nuance and grey area that I personally think makes it way more compelling. So yes, the characters tell us many, many times that all vampires are pure evil and nothing remains of the human they used to be, but the more you watch the more you'll see that's not exactly what we're shown. Some people say it's inconsistent writing, and maybe it is in the sense that it wasn't intended to be that way at first, but I think the result is a very layered narrative that gets the audience to think more deeply about the story and the characters.

i love buffy/angel!! idk they're fictional characters, and he's a vampire ... you do kinda just gotta role with it. their story is really fascinating regardless though.

👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾I always side-eyed Xander for these very reasons. As the series progresses, there comes a breaking point for me, which while I watched, I could not pinpoint, and mistakenly attributed to another character. It wasn’t until rewatching that I was able to hone in on Xander as the true source of my distaste.

Classic R & B Lover

Angel and Buffy was, is, and always will be creepy. Take away the whole vampire angle, and you have a guy in his late 20s trying to get with a 16 year old girl. I never liked the pairing when I live watched and I side-eyed anyone I knew who supported the pairing. I could never be a part of the on-line Buffy fandom because it was always ❤️❤️❤️ Angel and Buffy, when for me, it was always 🤢🤢🤢 Angel and Buffy.

Loving your Buffy journey, so glad you're finding a lot to like here! ❤️

Everything Angel said is true. In the Buffyverse, your soul is basically you, your humanity. When you become a vampire you die, and your body is taken over by the demon. Angel still has the demon inside him but it's overpowered by his soul, the actual him who died when he was turned. So basically the demon killed his family, It wasn't Angel, but he blames himself for that, and for all the terrible things the demon did, because he has the memories, and he remembers feeling nothing when he did these things. Well... actually, he remembers feeling joy when he did them. But no remorse, no empathy, no mercy to anyone. Bottom line; yes Angel is good. Him falling in love with Buffy is something a lot of people in the fandom find creepy, but everyone admits there is something special between them. Also, the reason he turned into his vampire form when he kissed Buffy for the first time in her room, was probably because Buffy was wearing a cross necklace and he got burned. When he kissed her at the end he was expecting it and knew how to control it, so he didn't pull back.

Watching this along with you after the 28 years Ive been watching Buffy I have a more mature understanding of why Ive never liked Xander. At least I can articulate it better now. It's the fact that he only dislikes other guys because he really does believe that if his "competition" is gone Buffy will just pick him, when it's clear she has no interest in him at all whatsoever. It's definitely a frustrating character attribute of his that I can now clearly articulate. I get that he's a teenager but its would be irritating no matter what character it's attached to honestly.

Okie dokie, pausing after 'Angel' to comment! I forgot that Principal Flutie gets eaten, lol. It's so insane that that happens in sesason ONE and isn't a major plot point! Its now our second death for a character we know - the first being Jesse, Xander's friend in the pilot. I miss Flutie, he was a silly man who deserved better - RIP! Onto 'Angel', the first thing I'll say that I don't think is very spoilery but is fun to know is that episode 7s are always imo Really Important Episodes in BTVS. It's kind of when the plot really starts moving forward, and I think every season's episode 7 is a top ten! Here, we get introduced to Angel's lore! So yeah, Angel's being honest, I don't think he had any reason to lie in that instance, he murdered his family and basically everyone around him. That's what vampires in the Buffyverse are - pure evil. You got it - he became a vampire, killed without remorse, killed the wrong girl (it's also important to note she was a young girl like Buffy) and in revenge, her people cursed him by giving him a soul. Thus causing him to feel remorse and basically having a conscience. So the reason Angel was playing along with Buffy in this episode when she was going to kill him is because he thinks he deserves it -- he struggles with the immense guilt of everything he did while soulless. He is also STILL a vampire, so the evil demon is still inside him wanting to cause harm, like he says he wanted to do with Joyce, Buffy's mom. I won't comment on his age too much because it's not been revealed but Buffy tells her mom he's in community college so we're supposed to assume he's over 18 maybe early 20s at the latest. It's very gross to me as a 30 year old now, lol, but it isn't really addressed in the show so it's something you just have to... accept. He's a vampire, so that kinda negates the age gap regardless of their physical ages in this universe. I've come to accept it, though it does paint Angel in a different light to me and he's not my favorite character no matter what he does because of it. Also - Darla with the guns is kinda iconic, lmfao! But Angel killed her, and as they explained, she was his maker so that's kind of a #bigdeal! The cross burning his chest is a direct callback to their first kiss, I think, because the reason he vamped out in the first place is because he got burnt by her cross when they kissed. The second time, he's ready for it, and accepts the burn in order to kiss her. Okay, onto episode 8!!!

Ep 8 thoughts: You are…. picking something up with Xander. I don’t want to editorialize too much before you get further but you’re not wrong in your comment on this one. Intro to Jenny Calendar! And re: the corkscrew, you heard her!!!! 😂🤫
