I was 12 when this season came out and this episode was the reason I got into Emily Dickinson 🥰

Did I sub just to get early access to Buffy content? Perhaps! I'm also rewatching your IWTV reactions in full this time, since I'd only seen the edited versions on YouTube :3

Saying this as a capital F FAN, and someone who does like Xander most of the time: this episode highlights some of the aspects of Xander’s character that tire me. This “no one sees me so I’m going to sabotage something as retaliation” thing is key to his overall arc and while I think he’s maybe the most consistently funny character, he’s got a real sharp, unpleasant edge at the same time. It’s intentional I think, and effective— all of them are flawed, and his flaws bother me more than others haha. Try not to focus too much on the comments about Cordelia-that-will-be if you can. TBH it’s spoiler territory.

This episode is the first time we see how difficult it is to balance slaying and maintaining a social life, whch is something Buffy always struggled with, and you will see more of it in later seasons. As we saw in the first episode, this responsibility has cost her a lot, and more than anything she wants to escape it and be a normal teenager, but that's her destiny, she doesn't want it, but she has no choice, the fate of the world rests on her shoulders. And although she resents her calling, there is a part of her that wants to help people. What she struggles with is not the act of helping itself, but the obligation of doing so. Her friends chose to fight evil, she didn't. They can choose to stay home and watch a movie instead of being outside on a school night fighting monsters, she can't.

Luckily they don't keep Buffy and the gang in high school unnaturally, weirdly long.

Poor Buffy. Nothing like dating on the Hellmouth. This is a decent episode that lays out the challenges and responsibilities she has while attempting to connect with others socially. I do wish they would have cast someone younger for Owen. Dude looks 30! Of course several of the main actors are quite old too (I believe Charisma Carpenter/Cordelia was 27 this first season), but damn. Apparently the new Buffy reboot is casting actors that are very close in actual age to the characters they play. It’s a shame they have so many obviously fully grown adults cast in the OG series—it makes it easy to forget how YOUNG our beloved gang is when first encountering these challenges. Love your reactions! Thanks for giving us a few episodes at a time.

To follow up on this—the remaster situation is a huge debacle, in which the changed aspect ratio changed it so set people were caught in frame, and lighting changes can make it look like vampires are walking around in daylight when it didn’t look that way in the original. The changes also do a disservice to some of the special effects. It’s definitely recommended to find DVDs if you can. I do know someone out there has the OG files and they’ll often send a link to reactors so they can react to the better version—keep your eyes open on YouTube especially for an offer.

Please consider getting the dvds of the original version, in 4:3 the lighting and mood were such a huge part of the story. I’ve really enjoyed your input and point of view with how much you enjoy it and the details you pick up on. Keep it up!
