If you watch closely at the end, you can see Nathan breaking the 4th wall a little bit.

Yeah, I hear you on this one not being as strong as some of the others, although I’ll say that on the rewatch I did of the series on my own in April after like 10 years, I liked it a lot more than I remembered. So in 2035 when you rewatch it, maybe you’ll like it more too lol
It’s hinging a lot on us forming an emotional connection with a guest actor we don’t know, and it doesn’t quite get us there. Imo would have been more effective if he’d actually been dead the whole time and we just saw flashbacks of him throughout.

I agree with you, this one is also not one of my faves. It's not bad of course, but if I'm doing a rewatch by myself I will skip it sometimes. I do like knowing the story that another commenter mentioned - the crew was told about the cancellation before the final scene so their sadness in that scene is real. This is also the episode that gave us the Jayne hat - iconic. Oh - and if you listen to Jayne reading his mother's letter at the beginning, you will also hear him mention his sibling being sick - I believe he sends money home to his family, so take that for whatever it is worth in regard to *some* of his behavior.

Just a FYI (in case you don't know) apparently the cast and crew found out about the show being canceled either just before or while shooting this episode. Which in my opinion makes the end of the episode even sadder.
I do understand your feelings about the episode as not everyone can be a favorite. As usual, I enjoyed your reaction. Stay shiny. :)
