SCHINDLERS LIST REACTION

SCHINDLERS LIST REACTION

Comments

I saw this movie in the theater when it came out, I was 13 and I'll never forget that experience. I'm so glad you got to see this and learn more about this history. I feel that with every generation that passes, these events are less emphasized in schools and media and consequently feel less resonant to young people. The impact of the Holocaust created shockwaves that reverberate through global politics and many societies to this day, but as the specifics of the horror fade from common consciousness, so too does the ability to recognize the early warning signs of genocide. You were so right to draw parallels to the institution of slavery in the United States, and that's why it's crucial to learn about these dark periods of history and keep them present in our minds. Maybe eventually humanity will no longer repeat them.

I was not going to watch this movie again, ever, after first seeing it years ago. Yet, I did want to view your reactions and comments. There is nothing much more I can say about the atrocies; they sear my heart and soul. I do want to mention this movie provides a lesson in how powerful propaganda can be. When you study history and see pictures of Hitler and so many young men and even boys surrounding him, cheering for him...it is bone chilling for me. I couldn't believe it when I first learned about "Hitler Youth" training camps, designed to turn boys into Nazi's in order to have a military reserve.Β  The movie Jojo Rabbit is another must watch. Although controversial, it is satirical and I felt it did a good job of using humor to mock the Nazi regime and Hitler. The movie also serves valuable lessons in love and humanity and is also a huge reminder, especially now more than ever, that we need to always educate our children about tolerance and that there's no place in this world for hate.

If you're ever in DC, you should go to the Holocaust Museum.

2:34:52 Dehumanization. How do you get so many people to commit such atrocities? You must make the humans seem like they are not humans -- so they call them vermin and rats. We've seen this in so many cases in history. We see it now with immigrants to the US. I used to use this with my students: https://www.adl.org/sites/default/files/pyramid-of-hate-web-english_1.pdf

1:27:19 The deciding factor is whether or not they can be used for labor. Period. They killed anyone old, weak or too young. The healthier you were the longer you lived in work camps. That wasn't the case in extermination camps, obviously. Ultimately, the goal, Hitler's "final solution" was a total genocide of the Jewish people. They started off with groups of SS, I think called the Eisengruppen (something like that), who were basically military death squads who made them dig graves and then they shot them all and buried them. Then, that became too "inefficient" for them, so they moved to gas chambers and crematoriums. The very first victims were those that resisted, naturally. I also want to mention the Judenrat, who were Jews that were given "leadership" positions within the ghetto and work camps, but they basically followed Nazi orders in the hope that it would extend their own lives. You can imagine that many felt that to be a betrayal.

1:25:13 And they called this "liquidation" of the ghetto. The euphemisms are part of the propaganda. Reminds me of Kristy Noem saying they need to "liberate LA" -- same type of bullshit.

1:11:59 I read the story of a family that actually hid in the sewers and some of them survived. Unreal.

40:15 Yes, he's basically a war profiteer. A failed businessman who saw an opportunity.

I loved the acting the message and hated seeing how these people were treated but it also felt very necessary to see. I understand your hesitation because I am not sure myself if I will ever watch this again.

I don't know if I can handle this right now -- just seeing your thumbnail makes me want to hug you. The movie is harrowing yet speaks to the endurance of hope and love.
