My Dad loves to tell the story about how he went to see Emerson Lake and Palmer when he was a teenager in the 70’s. He said that during a break between songs, Greg Lake out of nowhere belted out “Confusion, will be my epitaph” and sang the chorus of “Epitaph” acapella. He was greeted by cheers from my Dad and only a few other members of the audience who were “in the know” and still loved Greg’s King Crimson days.
Greg Lake, the original singer for King Crimson and a musical hero of mine, died on December 7th, 2016 while we were on tour with our pals Thank You Scientist and Moon Tooth. The power and golden beauty of Greg Lake’s voice is something I’ll always aspire to. I felt the need to pay tribute to a man who had given me so much beautiful and inspiring music, so I decided to perform one of my favorite all time favorite songs in the history of music. “Epitaph” by King Crimson was one of the first songs I ever learned to play on the guitar. It was the first progressive rock song I ever loved. It profoundly influenced the way I write music.
This performance is from the last show of our 2016 tour. In the audience is my Dad. You can hear him shout “we love you, Greg” at the end of this video.
