The Children are Our Future
Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time is the latest adaptation of the wonderful fantasy stories from the middle of the twentieth century to hit the big screens and, just like every other film in this genre, it will please most, but not all. Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia, and The Princess Bride have all felt the same joy and wrath from newcomers and diehard fans alike, so it is not a big surprise that Wrinkle delivers to some and not all. I found the film to be wonderfully beautiful and mesmerizing on the big screen. The story was well-paced and the performances were good, especially Storm Reid and Deric McCabe as Meg and Charles Wallace, respectively. Sacrificed to a manageable runtime were smaller characters from the original text, including two of my favorites, the twin brothers Sandy and Dennys. While this doesn’t impact this story, if Disney decides to further the franchise, it will become an issue as the twins are the main characters of the fourth book in the series. The A-List celebrities--Winfrey, Witherspoon, Kaling, Pine, Galifianakis, and Pena--certainly knew their roles were supporting and let the children shine so the entire ensemble worked seamlessly to provide a fertile tapestry for Ava DuVernay to weave a visual tale worth seeing.
