Red Sparrow was one of my most-anticipated films of the early spring, which is saying a lot with other offerings being Black Panther, Ready Player One, and A Wrinkle in Time. This was because it had two of my favorite things about movies: espionage and Jennifer Lawrence. The trailers were well-edited and piqued my interest, but Red Sparrow failed to live up to my expectations of the genre. Let’s set aside my own personal issue of smoking in films, because it would be expected in the time and place; yet, unlike Charlize Theron in Atomic Blonde, it seemed awkward with Lawrence. While the story was intriguing and the finale was well-done, the overall caliber of the film was left lacking in comparison to modern fair like Blonde, Bourne and Salt, and nowhere near the brilliance of Hunt for Red October, Russia House, or Gorky Park. Red Sparrow lands somewhere in the middle, near The Sum of All Fears, nothing groundbreaking, but an all right way to pass a couple of hours.
