Adventure Gamers' Clubhouse #7: The Legend of Kyrandia, Book One

So, I know I said that this month we'd be doing Eric the Unready by Legend Entertainment, but I got halfway through and the vibes were just off. It was a long month leading up to November, which was an even longer month leading into December. I wanted something that I remembered as having pleasantly chill vibes, and not clashing against me the way Legend's famous UI was doing.

Well, I was almost right.

This month's ultimate selection was a game I remembered as a laid-back, low stakes fantasy romp through enchanted forests with quaint characters, a simple interface built largely around managing a ten slot inventory, and a lovely Frank Klepaki score. I did remember the maze at the middle and one tedious puzzle, but we're grown now, we're prepared. We know how to solve these problems. It was time to nestle into a beloved childhood game that was largely uninterruptive, and certainly not something choleric and ill-mannered like King's Quest III.

I was so wrong. This month's AGC is a testament to the failure of memory, that dreams of faraway childhoods are not always the basis for contemporary critical assessment. It's recapitulation of the lesson of EcoQuest, to be sure. But, hey, the Frank Klepaki fantasy synth score absolutely whips.

Hope you have fun on this journey with me...

As for December's game, well...

It's a weird franchise! I ended up really loving the gentle weirdness of 2 and being fascinated by 3 until I ran into a game-ending hardware issue (that early, early 3D era was rough). Definitely going to have to revisit the others in the new year.
