Adventure Gamers' Clubhouse #6 - Grim Fandango

¡Feliz Día de Muertos!

Amusingly enough the amount of difficulty I had both with this game having catastrophic glitches and the sheer volume of clips making exporting a touch-and-go process, this entry is arriving not on Halloween, but the more appropriate Day of the Dead proper.

Grim Fandango was a weird one. As rich and vivacious as the characters and dialogue are, the plot felt drawn thin, as much as the game was abrupt with cutscenes and narratice beats the puzzles and actual gameplay felt needlessly long and overly padded. And while I loved the art direction mostly, it felt like much of what I loved was just that...an aesthetic layer drapes over a series of classic Hollywood tropes and jokes with a sprinkle of Mexican folklore, pokes at revolutionary movements and no real depth to it.

Still I'm glad I returned to this after decades having put off. It was an interesting (if frustrating at times) experience and I hope you'll come along with me for it!

Later this month we'll be doing something Not Lucasarts or Sierra, I haven't landed on one yet but I have some ideas that I think will be fun, chaotic, and hopefully exciting!
