TBR of *brain cuts out*

You know how I said last post that I was having a hard time concentrating and finishing what I was reading? Well, it's worse. So that's fun. I'm about to go to Maine to visit friends and family and freeze my butt off, and I'm hoping that relaxing will get me back on track.

I'm about halfway through One Dark Window by Gillig (Adult, Fantasy) and I'm enjoying that so much that I got the second book at the bookstore last night. It's fantasy on the darker side of things, but not bleak or sad. The magic system in it is very cool, the characters are complicated, and the setting is a town called Blunder, cut off from the world by magic cursed fog.

I'm almost done listening to Relight my Fire by McDonnell (Adult, Comedic supernatural mystery) and still really loving it. The series has had the same narrator throughout (Brendan McDonald) and I think he does a great job with the voices. The series has been very funny throughout, full of wonderful characters and found family and the magic has been very inventive.

Smalls and I are still reading Cold Cereal (MG, fantasy) by Adam Rex. He's been really into it. Rex has an offbeat humor that my kids like--his picture books Frankenstein Bakes a Cake and Frankenstein Makes a Sandwich have long been fan favorites in this house. Since his assigned reading has been nonfiction, I picked him up a copy of Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls 2 last night because he loved the first one so much and we've been enjoying reading all the different short biographies. Last night he chose to read about Georgia O'Keefe and skateboarder Sky Brown and I chose Agatha Christie (because of course I did).

I've finished a couple of romance ARCs (advance reader copies for those of you outside of publishing). The Love Remedy by Elizabeth Everett (historical) was pretty fun because the female lead had inherited her father's apothecary and the story worked in a lot of the history surrounding that stuff. The male lead was the son of a titled lord who had been cut off because he was not only a prize fighter, but acknowledged the daughter he had with his mistress. Lots of little tidbits about class differences, gender, science and racial divides at the time. I also finished the ARC of The Rival by Maisey Yates. Every once in awhile I go through a kick where I read cowboy romance. I cannot tell you why. (Zero shame intended on people who love cowboy romance. I will never, ever shame what you read. I just don't think I'm what you would picture as the target audience for this book.)

Speaking of romance, a few of my friends read waaaaay more of the Ice Barbarian series (adult sci-fi romance)  than I have, which is funny, because I told them to read the first one after I read it as I thought they'd like it. They have surpassed me by far. So I read a few more to catch up. I'm still unsure if humans, even with symbiotes, could live on an ice planet that never had spring, but that is entirely my fixation and not a deal breaker. If you're into sci-fi romance/fated mates, this series is fun.

I have a feeling that, because my anxiety has been so high, I'll be doing some rereading or relistening the next week or so. The funny part is, some of the anxiety is based on really good things that I can't tell you about yet. (But hopefully soon!) And yet, my brain is a trash monster full of trash. Ugh.

For what I'm watching--I continue to love The Brother Sun with my whole heart, though I've been parsing out the episodes slowly. I made Smalls watch UHF, an old Weird Al movie. Some of the jokes didn't age well because the 80's sure did think fat phobia, racism, sexism and homophobia were HILARIOUS but I still love UHF. (In the scale of 80's film wincing, UHF doesn't have most of this stuff, but just a head's up.) We've also continued to watch Percy Jackson series and be delighted in that. We've been very pleased with their interpretation.

Oddly enough, the thing I hate most--revising--has been very soothing to me. I'm trying to get East Bound and Down, a project I did on here waaaaay back in the beginning, revised and handed off to my agent. Fingers crossed!

Okay friends, now it's your turn--what have you been reading and watching? What should I check out?

I'm really enjoying the sequel, too, and I LOVED the Undermining of Twyla and Frank. How was Lost Gods? I haven't read that.

I LOVED One Dark Window (and loved the sequel even more)! I just finished Lost Gods by Brom & am about to re-read The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy so I can read the ARC I have of the sequel :)

Me too! I haven’t read either of those books. I’ll have to check them out.

LOVED Percy Jackson, and am VERY excited that they already green-lit Season 2! Just finished The Heiress by Rachel Hawkins, which was wickedly funny. Am about to start The Midnight Library by Matt Haig : )
