What you're looking at is a procedural voxel landscape, built entirely out of desktop icons.
Basically, "Minecraft" on the desktop. Literally.
(the first main version of this idea, anyway.)
Can you scroll, build, and break? Yup, here's the engine in action.
The techniques used to make this possible (in anywhere close to realtime) have gone through a ton of iterations. Laying out the right icons, and forcing Windows to redraw the desktop "fast" on-schedule, is surprisingly nuanced! But it's working pretty awesome now.
Also, no promises on how this is going to turn out, it's just one of the mechanics I've been working on.
You'll see how this develops, but I just wanted to drop this update on how things have been going - it's been a busy month, after all!
