I loved this episode I’m from Canada and our system is messed up. I worked as a specialized educator technician before becoming a stay at home mother, And it is extremely disappointing and discouraging the way the system is! I’ve been wrestling with the idea for sometime now . So thank you for this topic, it’s not an unusual conversation of the podcast but really appreciated , as well as, so many of your other conversations Lots of gratitude and love for everything you guys do

I was doing online classes and my son was doing college math in what would be considered middle school. In fact, he was helping me most of the time.

We unschool and always have! We do about 2 hours per day 4 maybe 5 days a week. We have the required curriculum but we choose every single thing we teach our son. He’s at least two years ahead of other kids his age.

Depends on how you decide the structure. I un-schooled with a structured reading, writing and math. From what I've heard from you guys that might be more up your alley. You have other subjects but the kids get to pick what the curriculum is. They become more interested then being forced to learn about what you decide. Therefore, they retain the information much easier! For example, instead of hrs and hrs of book work a day we did a lesson, allot of hands on then a test. You can focus on their strengths and interests, which helps with the stuff that struggle with because they are enjoying what they are working on otherwise. I used free print outs and a few books (usually second hand). We spent about 8-10hrs a week with book work and the rest was hands on. Un- schooling is basically taking out the politics out of their lives and letting them pick what they want to work on. Not sure how it is in FL but you can also have a friend/teacher go over what you've been doing, write a letter out signing off that you are doing the work, what the kids are excelling at or not. Rather then doing a yearly test. Save the letters. You don't have to submit them (again different in each state). For "graduation" you can buy "the big red" book (GED) use that as your high school guide. 4H is amazing! They get socializing, learn about community and animals. They have events (and they can even earn money). My kids worked with pygmy goats!! You can take a 6wk home schooling class certification or degree. These costs are way out of league, in my opinion.

One of the better episodes, I can believe your son stood up the way he did that just proves he has the best examples
