Here are some screenshots of the earlier iterations Mike did of Fugger displaying his Italian-American heritage.
We knew from the start that we'd have to hone in on a very specific look for Fugger in this episode. First and foremost, he would still need to be wearing his signature four coats underneath whatever new thing he was wearing so that he would keep his typical silhouette. It would just feel off if you could actually see his forearms like in Episode 1.
Then we needed to find a way to have his costume read as "Stereotypical Italian-American Mobster." However there really is no solid stereotypical look for that aside from the pinstripe suit, and this isn't the 1920's. We looked at the kind of clothes that would be worn by Tony Soprano or the cast of Goodfellas, but it all still felt like it wasn't obvious enough.
Eventually we stumbled on this Eric Andre skit where they seemed to already find the solution to this very problem. They needed their mobster character to immediately read as "mobbed up" without him ever explicitly saying "I'm in the mafia." The design hit the nail on the head for us so we decided to take inspiration from their costume.
