New video: Italy Talking Points

Hello everyone. I had a whole bunch of things I was thinking about discussion but I thought I'd hone it down to mainly: the penalties, and the safety car.

I'm trying to think about using the race to focus in on one main area and maybe a couple of secondary ones. Depending on what comes up!

Intriguing idea - I think it might end up increasing the frustration and qualifying becomes more and more detached from the actual grid as time goes on though The way I see the time penalty playing out is the same as when we see people racing on different strategies: part way through the race, the cars together might not be racing for "net position" and that will be resolved as the rest of the race unfolds, which is an interesting part of racing and strategy. And the good thing is, once everyone's had their first stop, we're immediately back to straight racing again

I never liked the "back of the grid" concept. I'd like to see smaller, permanent engine penalties... Instead of having multiple items rack up a one-time penalty of 10+ grid spaces, each additional engine component would get a +1 (or maybe +2 for the ICE) grid penalty which would get applied WHENEVER YOU ARE USING THAT COMPONENT. So, if you use 1 extra ICE, then you get a 2 place grid penalty whenever you're using that ICE. If you then take a 2nd extra ICE, that one will drop you 4 places whenever you're using it. The idea of a time penalty is interesting. The only thing I don't really like about it is that you have to spend the first stint with this unresolved pre-race penalty looming over the race... Maybe this would be less of a problem if F1 got their on-screen time penalty graphics up to snuff, but for now, it would end up with commentators having to remind us that "Leclerc isn't really battling with Russell, because he has an 8 second Engine Penalty that he hasn't served yet." Perhaps a combination of the two would be good... First, grid penalties are applied, from back to front, until the cars are sorted in ascending-left-over-penalty order... Then, for each left over penalty that couldn't be applied because of lack of grid spaces, an x second time penalty is added.

Yeah I think ultimately there isn't a cure all that doesn't have some problems or end up a little problematic. Not yet anyway! Wish teams could just manage their engines better :) I think the 'carrying over' issue ends up with additional complications (e.g Lewis Hamilton would take penalties for three races in a row, from Italy) but it's hard to judge what the audience deems suitable

Thanks for your video Stuart, your visualizations are on-point as usual (if your visualizations were used during the broadcast, people would stop complaining about how hard it is to assign penalties!). What about if penalties carried over to the next race to prevent teams from simply blowing it out after they are +15? I feel that would be simple (sure, still a bit annoying since you don't start exactly where you qualified, but it is penalty after all). I think doing the 'time' penalty during the race still favors the faster teams as a 10s penalty for Redbull isn't the same as for Haas. One way to fix that is that you could make the penalties longer for the teams at the top perhaps? But still - complicated. So what do you think of penalty carry-over? pros, cons?
