The math for every car crash causing death vs every plane crash causing death makes planes way more dangerous.

Good point. Personally I find the trip to be a useful unit because I just want to know my odds of getting out of the vehicle alive when I get into it. People who would decide to drive across the country or take a flight across town would be in the extreme minority.

True but per trip is also probably not the best. if I have to get from New York to California, is it safer to drive or fly? Surely driving will count as many trips if compared to the average trip. Probably a better way that is a compronise between per mile and per trip would be per hour spent on road vs air

My coworker was talking about how dangerous planes are and I repeated Jack's theory even though I didn't really understand what he was talking about and my coworker was like wow thats so true. Jack, I think you're onto something even though you or I don't quite know what it is.

Could we please get a JT miniseries about the classic "kid jobs" - cowboy, astronaut, pirate etc. Perhaps an amusing juxtaposition of The harsh reality and the childlike ideal could be in order hmmmm

Here's the work for anyone who cares 🤷♂️
"34,000 fatal car accidents per year USA/365 days= 93 fatal car accidents per day in USA
Total car trips per day: approximately 5 per household
Number of households: 122 million
122million X 5 daily trips = 610 million trips per day in USA
610 MILLION/93= 6.5 million
So, approximately 1 out of every 6.5 million car trips will result in a fatal accident.
Now to compare to plane trips:
My own plane trip fatality research:
According to Reuters: https://www.reuters.com/business/aerospace-defense/aviation-deaths-rise-worldwide-2020-even-fatal-incidents-flights-fall-2021-01-01/
"Aviation consulting firm To70 said in 2020 there were 40 accidents involving large commercial passenger planes, five of which were fatal, resulting in 299 fatalities. In 2019 there were 86 accidents, eight of which were fatal, resulting in 257 fatalities.
Large commercial airplanes had 0.27 fatal accidents per million flights in 2020, To70 said, or one fatal crash every 3.7 million flights -- up from 0.18 fatal accidents per million flights in 2019."
So with planes there's a fatal crash in 1 of every 3.7 million flights
Correct me if I'm wrong but to me it looks like there's a fatal crash in cars in about 1 out of 6.5 million car trips but about 1 out of 3.7 million flights...
In other words you're nearly twice as likely to die in a crash when u step into a plane as when you get into a car.
As I suspected the purported "safety" of flying seems to be a statistical illusion caused by the fact that there are far fewer flights occurring than there are car trips occurring. Yes you're less likely to die in a plane crash than in a car accident, but that's only because you're far more likely to take a car than to fly. The crucial data point I think is this: how likely am I to die on this trip when I step on a plane vs when I get in a car.
If I've done my math right you're about 1.75x more likely to die when you get on the plane."

I had the same thought as Jack, the statistics the airlines share are goofy/ misleading.
A couple years ago I did my own back of the napkin math which took into account the fact that, as you say, people drive far more often.
The question I asked is this: how likely am I to die during any given car trip vs any given plane trip?
My busted calculations told me that there's a fatal car crash once in every 6.5 million car trips. There's a fatal plane crash once in every 3.7 million flights.
In other words you're about twice as likely to die on any given flight as any given car trip.
