Quest: Cubemap Obstacles

Looks like another game update, how exciting!

The latest update brought brand-new content to the game, along with some long-awaited changes to the playlist UI. We're once again waiting on a few core mods to update before posting submissions to #quest-mods and QuestBoard.


Now for the exciting part...

The new environment included some exciting new visual assets and shaders to play around with. This inspired me to experiment with some Quest-compatible alternatives for wall distortion effects.

This effect was achieved through capturing a cubemap of the environment and passing it through the new WaterLit shader with a few customized parameters. This method allows for some extremely primitive distortion effects. In laments terms, we can "fake" PC-style distortion effects using fancy 2D projection.


The included video showcases a promising prototype which uses the new water shader. While the current method of achieving this isn't the most practical, this may become a full mod if enough visual/utility improvements can be made.
