Early Release! TWISTED: The origin of twisted-pair Ethernet

Just in time for Christmas, we've finished a video that's been months in the making: the history of twisted-pair Ethernet. We hear from Richard Bennett who helped develop the original twisted-pair standard (1BASE5) as well as Pat Thaler who chaired the 10BASE-T task force.

We had an impromptu livestream this past Sunday where we attempted to get the StarLAN and Lattisnet hubs working. We didn't fully succeed, so we'll be back with an in-depth video looking at the hardware of these two pre-10BASE-T technologies, and seeing if we can finally achieve our goal.

As always, a massive thank you for your support over the past year. The channel continues to grow, and we're incredibly happy to see how much the netro community is growing as well. Hope everyone has a great holiday season, and we'll be back soon!

Take care,

Mark & Ben

We have a few AppleTalk-related devices around so we might venture into that territory at some point!

The Serial Port

In the late 80's, my entire University department was Macintosh based, with a large proportion of compact Macs. Thus, our networking infrastructure of choice was AppleTalk networking which plugged into the Mac 's serial port using a dongle. Even if one or two Macs were capable of having 10Base2 cards installed, we stuck with AppleTalk (there was no 10Base2 wiring installed at the time... although there was a 10Base5 (ThickNet) ethernet backbone installed to hook up a microVax machine to somewhere). It worked well in the department and was fully supported in system software, but sharing files across departments had to be done via 'sneakernet'. -- literally sending floppy disks via internal mail envelopes. It wasn't until the availability of AppleTalk to ThinNet transceivers (such as GatorBox) that we were able to reach out across the University's nascent ethernet network. Eventually the whole University went 10Base-T and AppleTalk was retired. Not sure if it's worth a show on AppleTalk sometime? It was pretty pervasive and somewhat unique back in the day.

What a nice Christmas present! I did NOT enjoy wiring ThickNet...

Nice one gents! It’s already Christmas Day here in Australia so I’m looking forward to watching it later this evening! Merry Christmas Everyone! Hoping to meet more of you fellow enthusiasts at some shows later this year when I return to the US for work.
