I have been allowing my players to roll, and then if they don't like them, take an enhanced array instead. (17, 15, 13, 12, 10, 8) Rolling stats is an important and exciting part of the game for some people, and they even enjoy having a character with low scores, or even a pair of low scores if the others are decent. Players who don't roll well still end up with a strong character. I know this does result in a stronger party overall, but its very easy to just tweak monster numbers anyway- I also hand out more magic items and allow people to out-level content, but pretty much double to number of monsters they fight in an offcial module by tier 2.
