Hi James! I don't think I'd run Scarlet Citadel with Shadowdark (or any RPG). It's problem isn't the system but the pure piles of text it throws at the GM without easy ways to reference it during the game. Kelsey's style of writing for Shadowdark is much preferred. I haven't yet decided what campaign or series of adventures I want to run for Shadowdark but I wouldn't use Scarlet Citadel I don't think.

Secrets and clues serve you! If they're working well for you, they're working. https://slyflourish.com/secrets_serve_you.html Certainly there are times where a secret best comes from a particular NPC or location or whatever, and that's totally fine. We typically don't want to lock an important secret behind just one point of discovery but as long as we're willing to move things around, there's no problem assuming a particular secret comes from a particular source.

Hi Mike. Now that you have run a game of Shadowdark and are wrapping up Scarlet Citadel, how do you think Scarlet Citadel would run as a Shadowdark campaign? Or are there particular parts of Scarlet Citadel that would lend itself to Shadowdark?

James

Im sure you must have answered this somewhere before but I wouldn’t even know what to search for. When planning secrets and clues, I often feel like “this location” or “that npc” would be an ideal source of specific secrets or clues. If the players miss the opportunity to acquire that information, I’m easily flexible enough to have the secret be found somewhere else, but is anticipating specific sources of the secrets and clues while doing prep Ill-advised?
