Sources for Creativity
PlasticSmoothie on the Sly Flourish Discord server asked about sources or tips for finding creativity in D&D. I'll offer up a few things that have fueled me up in these recent dark days. Most of the time I get my inspiration by diving into books, movies, and TV shows.
My wife and I read the books Kings of the Wyld and Bloody Rose and loved them. They're wonderful adventure romps written in a modern transparent style that had us both laughing out loud. Now we're reading the Hundred Thousand Kingdoms of the Inheritance trilogy by N. K. Jemisin and enjoying that as well.
Much of my Eberron campaign has been lifted directly from Stephen King's Waste Lands, the third book in his Dark Tower series. I also took a lot of ideas for the sentient warforged lighting rail villain in my Eberron game from the movie Snowpiercer.
I've found a lot to love in Arcana of the Ancients, the 5e treatment of Monte Cook Games's Numenera setting. It's been perfect for the strange arcane-technology of my Eberron campaign.
I recently rewatched and enjoyed Blade Runner 2049 and the Riddick movies for some fun fantasy inspiration.
I also absolutely loved the TV series Dark on Netflix. It's a real head-twister of a story that requires a crazy yarn and thumbtack chart to understand but it's worth it and great fuel for ideas in D&D although time travel is rarely a good idea in a D&D game. It's way too hard to manage when you have a bunch of characters happy to kill the butterflies 1,000,000 years ago.
